There is an option under View/Options/Chat tab for the obscene filter but it's unknown what that exactly does.

We are talking here about the obscene filter of the server. It can be turned on/off automatically by setting a property of the server.ini. It uses a server-side obscene.txt to filter out the entire sentence so it never reaches you.

This filter is on by default, and there is no inidiaction that it excists except a small line in the F2 help menu about ?obscene.

New players just have to figure out themselves why there is so little cursing.

Unknown by who? I know exactly what it does... it turns on the exact same ?obscene as is turned on in TW by default. It just means that in zones where they choose not to force the obscene filter to be turned on by default, players can still have it on by default. This is so they don't have to put ?obscene in their auto-commands, which would turn it OFF in force obscene zones like TW.

I agree with Weaver in that parents don't want their children (and yes, children do play) being exposed to these words. Call it sheltering if you will, it's no one's prerogative to tell a parent how to raise his/her children.

There are also many people who just don't want to see that kind of language being used. It is very crude and vile. It's tasteless. The basest of minds use swear words and they really take away from the meaning of a sentence. If you're worried about someone not seeing what you typed...try typing a sentence without the swear word.

In fact I'm quite surprised that so much swearing is allowed on these forums. It really illustrates the quality of intellect that's devoted to many subjects.

I suggest with doing away with swearing altogether, there's no color in sounding crude.

This is the other option where you leave the auto obscene on for everyone that has installed this game. Message the user, if you would like this to be turned off permanently, then type ?obscene. To turn it back on in the future, just simply type ?obscene

Just recycle the zone that way everyone gets this message. (Just don't recycle when I'm in a bd like last time...-_- )

Leave it on. Set it so that when you come into the zone it says "obscenity block on, type ?obscene to remove it." People curse less when they know everyone can't read what they're writing. I wouldn't advocate turning it on if it were off, but there's no real reason to turn it off, either.
