Look, can't we hipsters just hand emo over, seriously? Rites of Spring? Emo? NO! They are a weird band nobody listens to. Fall Out Boy is emo. The Ataris are emo. Let's stop confusing everybody.
edit: I'm not joking. The point is, emo people and people who listen to emo music are the same, because emo music is crap pop punk where people whine about girlfriends, and people who listen to that shit are lame as fuck. I know when I listened to The Ataris I was lame as fuck. Lasssssssssst Night I Had A Dream WHERE WE WENT TO DISNEYLAND well that song is still kinda good
I think the problem is unlike pretty much every genre until the 80's, "emo" didn't have a wide, national, public following - it was mostly an offshoot of an already very small community, the DC hardcore scene. That was like, the Rites of Spring, Hoover, Moss Icon, and maybe Embrace. When it was dragged kicking and screaming into the limelight by a combination of hipsters looking for new music to namedrop and corporations looking for more fodder for their exploitation machines, that's when emo became codified into what most people think of it now, which is pop punk.
