yeah discrepencies between lang. programs are huge unless you go to a univ.
at my old hs:

Spanish III: worked on writing essays, making speeches entirely in spanish
French III: never took french but i heard it was on par with spanish prog.
Latin III: we translated an entire book (was a children's story though)
German III: they made greeting cards and got to use the book on tests....

i ended up getting a german minor in college... final paper was 7500 words on my family's geneology
