SubSpace/Continuum Poster

I found Continuum at www.download.com. I wasn't going to play despite the bad review given by the boys at CNET, but I was bored out of my mind. Them being a big promoter for free games and the such, I think we should instead, work on trying to have them re-review Continuum again, but, focus on the Trenchwars Zone. Let's face it, all the other zones suck ass, and the review below is clearly not about Trench Wars. Please read the review below.

"Originally developed for the now-defunct Virgin Interactive, this fiendishly difficult online space shooter is now completely free. You begin Continuum (formerly Subspace) by creating a profile, selecting a ship, and entering a zone, each of which has a different map and different rules. The basic object is to rocket around the scrolling 2D space collecting power-ups, upgrading your ship, and blasting your opponents, though many servers play variants that include Capture The Flag and Powerball. Newbies beware: zero-gravity physics, nonconfigurable controls, and merciless veteran players make Continuum's learning curve very steep. Getting the game to run was no picnic either. It crashed our Windows XP test machine so badly we had to reboot, though it ran fine on Windows 2000--well enough for us to curse the lack of a decent help file. The sounds and graphics are fine for a freebie, but the unfriendly interface makes it far too easy to accidentally enter communications mode, leaving you helplessly typing nonsense letters as your opponent swoops in for the kill. Which program do u use to make these posters? I tried using microsoft powerpoint, but cant attach the screenshot i took to it, plz tell me.

I think, personally, though I'm sure many will concur, that most people aren't going to see a poster and go download/play the game.... You'd be better off making a sweet flash banner advertisement with those awesome games like "beat george bush in tug-a-war and win an xbox!," which everyone loves to click their heart out and win, and then instantly close the box before even seeing the actual website that pops up.

I personnally would like to see dueling for money, how would this help u may ask? Well 2 players decide to duel, both betting 5 dollars, when someone wins the house (continuum) makes 10 percent, it would be a great way to shut up noobs and also a way to make the game more competitive.

We can also do a Ban Rudy fundraiser, if u reach a certain amount, rudy can be ignored for 1 month, it certainly would make this game more entertaining

Thanks for the posts directly above, they saved me some money that I was about to stupidly invest in this community.

While true, what is the target audience? ‘Rage’ type poster might have appeal to a certain demographic, and that probably is the correct demographic to go for, the under 20 male audience. Yet it has been often stated that the TW zone is family orientated, so is it worthwhile to consider other demographics? Are posters going to generate the same amount of interest for males and females? And does not a full size poster represent more value in terms of having something worthwhile to offer for championships and large event winners?

Note, I think Kolar posted above asking the same type thing, ‘what is the problem we are trying to solve?.

Can't neglect the power of DIY advertisement, though. If a flyer is designed well for black and white, people will look, and it'll have a certain aesthetic that says it's not like the same crap you see in the video game industry. Rough, grainy black and white copies would seem to epitomize SS rather well. Saying: "No, we don't have any money to speak of, but the game is still good, and it's yours for free if you want to join."

I don't think we should let production costs get in the way at least. A lot more people are bound to just print off 10 from the school printer or steal a copy code for 30 than go to Kinko's and spend even $10 on ads that will just get taken down a week later. Most people are probably not going to want to do anything unless it's excrutiatingly easy to begin with -- be lucky if everyone in this thread posts 3 B&Ws of any of these.

Hey Eph, where do you think we can even come up with that kind of money? Unless we hold a fundraiser again (like the one that helped pay for the server for a little bit) then I doubt any single person would contribute much money to even get anywhere close of what you are asking. Not to mention, having them printed then shipped to many different SS players, who may or may not even put them up. I'd personally rather leave it up to them to print them up and put them all over since it's not going to cost anyone really much of anything. I'm almost sure they have access to the resources necessary (ink, printer, and internet). I'm all ears, but that just sounded unreasonable to me unless some people willing to give money come forth.

No one will come forward with money unless there is an estimated budget and plan. So let's talk about the budget.

Holding contest - Free
Get Quotes to Print Decent Poster - Free (Would suggest starting off small, get Kinkos type quotes for low volume kick off, get larger volume quotes from local print houses for larger qty.)

Once this is completed, then we know what it will take $$$-wise to get this effort going. Obvious key would be have kick-ass graphics, something that people would want and be willing to buy.
