  • The hardest thing to learn in TW

I'm heading a group that is working on creating a ?go tutorial arena similar to that of DSB's. It will help newer players learn the basics of TW in an interactive but also informational format.

So, think back to when you first started playing TW. What was the hardest part to learn? How did you learn about the other arenas, which ships to play, and how to play?

If you started in another zone, was it easier to adapt to TW? What was the most difficult thing to learn?

    Thanks for all the comments.

    Definitely learning the commands.

A newcomer would not know how to switch pubs, change ships, or even quit. It took me over a month of playing to realize that there is more than one public arena. In my opinion, the tutorial should cover the basics of ship change, freq chat, priv chat, arena change, and all other command aspects that the poorly designed F6 help design fails at.

    Gl on the project.

In order from least complex to most complex.

                1. Public chat / Team chat / Frequency chat / Private Messaging
                2. Changing frequencies
                3. Changing arenas / private arenas
                4. Changing the game resolution
                5. Biller commands like ?lag, ?buy, ?status, ?ping, ?packetloss, ?userid, ?find, etc. (most are covered in the f1 menu though I think).
                6. Setting up ; chats

Isn't the 'Help Ticker' automatically on when people first download the game and enter the zone? That says a lot if people take the time to read it. Whats going to be different in a ?go tutorial arena?

I'm pretty sure that most newcomers don't even bother with reading the help ticker. Good luck with the tutorial.

When I first started playing I had the most trouble getting to know all the key combinations. Asking never really worked either ("how do you shoot that circle of bullets?").
Once I figured that out, the commands were probably the next best thing to learn.

Arena swapping wasn't ever a problem for me as I discovered that quite quickly by looking at the Esc menu and then discovering the arena list by pressing 'a'.

I don't think you need to have advanced knowledge over the chats as a newbie. Talking in public chat is the most simplest you can imagine and if you want to talk in yellow (it's how you see it as a newbie) you can ask the other players.

didn't the game used to have an offline tutorial zone you could play in? I vaguely remember that now. That would be sweet to have another one of those again. But make it so stuff could actually shoot back at you.. build a bot with some AI to kill you! then make the bot so realistic that it macros you saying 'roflcopter noob mrpenny just took one up the ass from my awesome blue bomb' .. then the new player will get full effect of what life is like in trenchwars.

Yeah, whatever happened to the offline tutorial. It wasn't extremely helpful but it covered the little things like movement, shooting, greens and such.

The offline tutorial could be run from the original Subspace client, it got removed on Continuum.
Recreating this would cost alot of time as you would be trying to do it in a zone instead of directly in the client. This is why we are recreating this feature in a way that's doable: a tutorial map and a bot that helps the player exploring the game.
