Secondly, pictionary was as simple as lock, specall, setship, and the occasional warpto and a good eye by the host to see who said the correct answer first. There's no need for this event to be automated, as it doesn't require the assistance of a bot as something like hunt does.

Seriously, it's going to get to the point where newer staff won't be able to host anything that doesn't start with !, and do nothing that starts with a * (except for arena)

The pictionary module was never designed to replace the custom hosting of pictionary. Nothing is stopping Event Referees from manually hosting pictionary except laziness. Many people prefer the faster pace and word variety of the new pictionary as well as the competitive spirit drawn by the ability to win. I'd much rather be guessing randomly picked words instead of the usual "penis, ipod, ipod, penis, boobies, beer", but if you don't prefer it simply ask a staffer to manually host it and there's no harm done.
