a lot of the time i just suddenly spike to twice my normal lag and people accuse me of cable pulling (whatever that is), but i don't know why my lag just suddenly rises.

can someone tell me what S2C, C2S and normal ping do? cause my S2C and C2S are normally 0.1 and 0.0, i hear that is average, but my ping, ms or whatever is incredibly high. Does higher ms cause eating, and S2C cause jumping or something like that?

The issue I have is that unplugging violates other people's gameplay. When someone knows that a shark consistently mines in a certain place, he can just lag-cheat through them on a premeditated basis. People do this. When someone knows his goose is cooked, i.e., he is being lit up by multiple ships in the flag room entrance or on top of the flag, he can drop some packets, then plug back in and fly past the depleted defenders. Every time a basing game starts with ear warps on, you see two or three ships make a suicide run, then flicker out and magically reappear in safety.

Lag is a downer for everyone, but deliberate cheating is demoralizing. It makes people not want to play, when someone keeps defying inevitable death. Again, I have nothing against Aussies / Kiwis who happen to live far from the server and want to play. Consistent lag can be dealt with. Late packets aren't nearly as bad as deliberately lost packets.

I'd really like to see something like this in pubs...

You have to realize that this is the number of user names the bot has seen from your country,
or all we know half of em are dald himself on aliases :P

So in that regard it's more than likely isn't a unique number cos those are just names seen by bot...

I might be wrong and mav did code to per IP-2-geological location,
which would mean 1 user recorded per unique IP addy...

But with how NZ and aussie internet is setup and costs,
not many ppl have a static assigned ip and our assigned IP changes ever so slightly upon each reconnect to ISP...

So i suspect that is the number of diff names from a given country...

yeah, don't take it personally. I don't mind austrailians with stable lag nearly as much as people who could potentially have a 30ms connection, yet they sit on wireless just to manipulate their lag.

I didn't think too much of this until I played the other day, and had a player hop akin to the jav's "jump space ability" around my bullets twice in a row. he had a nice stable ping of 90ms until said jumps, which brought him up to around 250+ for a total of 1/2 a second. I dunno bout all this "cable pulling" crap, but it sure seemed like he was only jumping while dodging, and was able to shoot as if he didn't use any energy while doing so. I called him out on it, said I was going to report him, and lo and behold, he signs off.

So who knows, maybe ppl are cheating in pubs. But does it really matter? I don't think so.

I mean, if we had like x-men who could "jump" across a basketball court and magically score facing the wrong way without anyone seeing the ball, do you think we'd let them in the NBA? Probably, but those guys are X-men. You guys aren't nearly as cool.
You know our lag is bad for us as well, personally i think i could be the laggiest in all tw(and why i sit in spec a lot) sometimes bullets come at me from nowhere, and other times i cant see at all. I know a lot of people that lag a lot, and it's hard for them, but they still enjoy playing. And even if i am very laggy, i still have fun and play regularly.

Banning all aussies would just bring more downfall to tw. There are quite a large number of aussies playing the game.

I don't necessarily want to penalize players for living far from the server. It's the unpluggers I'm trying to eliminate. Lag that is high but stable is not the problem. It's the spike, the sudden change that indicates an unplug.

Again, as a compromise or first draft, I'd say let's take the hour of highest player volume and enforce lag spike limits during that hour, and see how it goes. A simple automatic 2 minute time out should curtail the cheating significantly. The lag bot could also log the players who spike, so if a ?cheater call is ever made on that player, they can see if the player has a history of spiking, or if it occurs at regular intervals.

As for players who are legitimate but live far away, here's what I've figured out: Fire where they immediately used to be, not where you see them. Better yet, try to shoot them while they are moving along the vector your bullet is traveling, so the delay matters a lot less.
