I don't mean single word names... which I still don't have the slightest idea of why they're so popular.

Everybody seems to forget that the ?setemail command doesn't work (anymore). As soon as someone pays money for a name, gets the password and changes it, the seller can easily reclaim the name by doing ?lostpassword <name>.
Asking netops about it will not help the buyer as the seller has claimed the name and has his name/registration data set on the name.

This has happened before, don't fall for it.

For this reason, such transactions can only turn bad and thus can be seen as illegal.

For reasons stated above, the usernames have been removed and will not be for sale.
