  • I have a suggestion

I think there should be a list of commonly ignored people (often people who spam, troll, etc), and I think there should be an option to subscribe to this list, so that it will auto-sync your ignore.txt.

This way you can avoid having to deploy ignoring methods, and spend more time playing the game.

Names which I could envision being on the list are, pee pee sock, MR. IM THE BEST, etc etc...

Thanks for your time, and I hope this makes it through the proper channels so that the game programmers can at least hear the idea.

Someone brought to my attention that it could be unfair to land your name on this list.

Originally my vision was that a bot would watch how many times a certain person is ignored in a certain time frame. For example, if pee pee sock enters pub, spams his racist macro for 5 hours, and in that time 20 people ignore him, the bot would detect that, and identify him as a good candidate for the permanent ignore list. Of course the numbers might change, depending on what numbers the staff think are reasonable.

Another method suggested by this person, would to have a staff member moderate the list. (Maybe there would be a report of who got ignored in the last 72 hours, etc)

Retarded idea. If you can't even scroll through everyone's posts then you don't belong on a forum.

Now, what if one of your friends ends up on this list? Because after all, I did notice that people actually talk to pee pee sock.

Well let me theorize a few different methods of deploying this list. I don't know the technical details of the game too well, therefore I don't know the plausibility of all the ideas.

1 - Have it updated each time you log in the game. - If you're friend is on the list, you can run the "listening" command each time you open the game by adding ?ignore *name* to the 'auto' field in the profile setup.

2 - Have it updated bi-weekly, monthly, etc. - If you're friend is on the list, you would probably manually remove his name from the list, after each update. If not you can use the method above.

3 - Straying away from the original "auto-sync" idea, they could publish the list on trenchwars.org, and make it so you have to manually copy and paste to ignore.txt - If you're friend is on the list, you can just remove his name after you copy/paste.

4 - Make it so that you can go to an arena, talk to a bot, and send a command like !sync, and have it automatically edit your ignore.txt. It would only sync your list when you send the command to the bot. Maybe even provide an !desync command to restore your ignore.txt to the way it was before. - If you're friend is on the list, you can just remove his name after each sync.

          Any other ideas?

            genocidal,

This is meant for when you are in-game, playing Continuum. Not for the Trench Wars forums.

sounds good but i don't think staff will go through all that trouble for people who're so annoying that they would go through all that trouble to really ignore them... i mean really.

I was thinking along the lines of somebody creating a forum in which one can somehow suggest names to add on a downloadable ignore.txt which will be updated and if the name gets enough 'kudos', the name will be added and anyone can download or copy/paste from the updated list. similar to your idea but just simplified.

              gotta keep it simple.

A bot can't tell who used ?ignore anyway, thats client specific...
And there is no way a bot can send you a file or edit anything on your computer.

A list thats human made is possible for those who wanted to make such a thing... but you can't make anything automated...

This isn't a good idea, for a few reasons. For one, you must always assume abuse will occur when players can affect other players. It probably wouldn't be hard to stage some grassroots effort to artificially get some players on the synched ignore list.

Once a player sees that he is ignored, he would simply alias to continue spamming/trolling/whatever (a limit on aliases might be nice though... time for a thread on that).

There are already a few easy methods to handle this sort of thing. Ignore.txt is a great feature and works well. You could also make an ?ignore macro (I have), so you hit shift+F3 and the ticked player is ignored.

Also, what constitutes spam or otherwise ?ignore-worthy chat varies from one person to the next. Mr I'm the best was funny for awhile. "Will trade dueling tips for pogs or cash." I got a few chuckles before I shut him down. En You Tee Zee loves to rattle in the pub chat about anything, pulling random quotes from news articles and wikipedia. It's not harmful, and some people shoot the breeze with him, but I silenced him awhile back. The point is, whom you choose to ignore, even in cases that might seem obvious, is still too idiosyncratic to apply universally.

Dev time would be better spent on other things.

Ok, I've started a forum post where we can share the contents out our ignore.txt - if people actually participate I will edit the first post and build a master list.
