As times change, people leave, less people come and the game slowly dies. This is the fate that all games eventually face in the coming years, but this game is on a different road to death.

As the years have come and gone, The euro community of Trench Wars has had a lot of lag issues that involve jumping from Europe, to the Washington D.C. area where the current "S.S.C.U." server is hosted (Trench Wars and 17th Parallel). Before Trench Wars was in D.C. it was hosted in Finland, where a lot of the European community came from and made squads and played to their heart's content.

The so called "hop one" router has caused a payload of packet loss, cutting packets coming and going from Washington D.C. to Europe, slowly cutting our euro community population to nearly none.

The bottom line is this, our American community is not dwindling in a rapid rate, in fact, it has been the same as it always has been. The reason we are dieing right now, is that the other side of the world that is in the same technological stage as we were when this game thrived cannot play due to the lag factor. Most of Europe is up to tech date, but some are not, and I am pretty darn sure that many have wanted to play that only sit in spectator mode because of the lag.

Here is the deal. There is a possible way to combat this. If you have not noticed yet, our zone carries a connected bridge with Extreme Games. You can hop over to E.G. without logging off and re-logging into E.G.

To go to E.G., type "?go EG".

To go back to Trench Wars, type "?go trenchwars".

It's a awesome tool, and I think we should use this tool to it's potential.

I myself would donate to pay for a server hosted in London, Germany, or whatever to host a European pub by using this very same tool, like typing "?go EuroTW", so that the Europeans can play without dealing with the lag / packet loss.

This will be a very big step for Trench Wars, and I would support it all the way and hope to have a better way for people around the world to play and support in our community once more.

In the end, there are so many ways, even with limits to this game, that we can do to bring back our population. We simply just have to give things a try.

You would effectively creating a second Trench Wars as those "bridges" you call are no more then a jump to another zone (you don't need to log off/on because both zones are on the same biller). It's not like you would be playing on a different server in the same zone.

I don't think this idea will work because of this. Advertisements, local chats and other zone properties won't be shared between the two zones so it's not very userfriendly and quite unmanagable.

I guess that the chats thing would be one negative to that, but it would be just a pub and a elim, so it would not hurt to have those things, and to go back and forth would not hurt at all; there is no logging off and logging on.

Just simply keep the directory blank on the euro server and the directory list should not have the eurotw zone listed, so people can only get to it through the main tw zone and ?go Eurotw.

as far as advertising events, you can have a bot relay the zonerbot in tw so it's no big deal really. The staff should have powers in both zones so to do work / taking actions should not be a bother.

The ideal situation for this is to be on that same biller

It's a good idea, but making another zone would probably defeat the purpose; most Europeans want lower lag so they can get more involved in competitive games and leagues like TWD.

An alternative worth consideration is moving the server to an alternative location...
Hockey/Football zone and Hyperspace are both hosted in New York with voxel.net and many Europeans including myself experience much lower lag with these zones; New York is much closer to Europe than Washington!

it would split the zone further prolly more so than when the distension idiots went running around.

The best solution would be to just dump HopOne (which still occasionally causes problems for me connecting from the West Coast) and use another route, but I'm doubting that would be an easy thing to do.

is it that Euros are being dropped off or that it is difficult to play with when North Americans have less lag?

I think there is some merit in the idea of considering 'grouping' arenas/leagues by lag performance. Would also help the issue of date/times games ar played or number of people online a certain time. Would also help with the whining about lag deltas. Hmmmm

I hate the fact how HopOne is causing people to lag on a daily basis for a period of 2 hours, making them unable to play and enjoy the game. The lag usually starts at around 11AM EST and ends at 1PM EST; and I can tell you that there's a lot of players with this problem all over the world.

Should either dump HopOne or make them fix their god damn router(s) that are causing so much trouble. :fear:

How do so many people know so much about all this? To me this is just a 2d spaceship game that works for the most part. Magically, of course.

Yeah, moving the server would be the best idea. Don't be cheap. Hell I know a lot of people who would donate for a better router. I wanted to get a sub-public server done and available to extend as much to the other side of the world as possible to give all the availability we can, to extend to however left this game still has to go, and that's a lot left we could still go!

Can you raise $15,000 a year for a dying game? Didn't think so, stop whining.
