Diamond being hard is related to its molecular structure, not its density. Density is Mass/Volume and Carbon is a relatively light element and as such Diamond is no where near being a very high density. Take this density comparison as an example:

Germanium 5.4
Diamond 3.52

And to take it a step further, the densest objects known to man are Neutron stars and Black holes.
