He then tried to make distension it's own zone and run it. That failed too.

I'd like to think I was helping improve gameplay in publics when i was on staff, being a mod and trying to keep teamkillers and other cheaters from ruining the fun of others. Yes, suddenly i care because the way in which this process was carried out was a complete gong show. Its disrespectful to all the players (especially the vets). Like so many people have said, you run tests in a test arena. I feel like im repeating alot of whats already been said. I just couldnt let ara talk to me like that.

The new pub system is now OFF by default as we will work on it to improve it. We will introduce an arena (let's say hmmm, ?go PubTest) for testing purpose only. The F1 is also being revised already as it was missing the old F1.

Nice Ara. I agree with loads of what you said there. If I may comment:

QFT! That's why I think it should be moved to a test arena, not only because it isn't ready, but also so people might stop bitching. As you know, some people here that get the impression that Staff+Dev don't listen, doing this could help heal that. The system might be turned off already, if so great - but I think it all should be ALL removed if you really want the best effect.

But there's more to it and if you would just think about it we could have an interesting pub.

100% true. So let's do it properly and introduce it gently. I'm not sure how, but I know you all will think of something good. A test arena maybe, advertise some kill-races to 100 there - it might even be an awesome event. Just don't stick it in pub when nobody expects it! Doing so makes players feel something is 'forced' upon them - I'm going to make a huge assumption here, but I think I speak for everyone on that. I feel that was the first and biggest mistake, and all this drama is just a consequence of that. It could have turned out so much better.

Even though there was a whole thread on the new proposed system, and maybe even more that I haven't noticed, the reality is this: 99% of the people who logged in did not expect to be faced with "Downloading level: 0%". It is the job of staff to promote awareness, not for us to search and find out. Just imagine, this bot could have been eagerly anticipated instead of one big bomb.

Pub isn't about skills, well maybe to the likes of Nockm it is, but to me or other random newbs it isn't.

Ouch Looks like I didn't express myself clearly. My primary concern is maintaining the level playing field for all players, at all times. A side-effect of that is, the more skilfully you play - the better you will do. This doesn't mean you have to play competitively to have fun, you can still do your own thing. I just don't want people to get the feeling that they've got cheated by another player.

Now that we lost another coder, a very special one this time, for ill-constructed feedback this will probably be put on hold or dismissed.

Looking at the thread http://forums.trenchwars.org/showthread.php?39366, he looked really motivated and happy to develop. It's quite tragic that the public managed kill that joy. IMO it's even more unfortunate if he hasn't learnt a large lesson from this - coding is not only about programming, but catering for your audience. There's still huge room for this to continue and be the success it can be, regarding both this system and him as a developer.


If that's all tl;dr, then just read this:
The problem is not in the bot itself, but the process of which it was introduced to the community. Consider starting the process of introduction all over again. This includes removal from Pub (including the $ counter underneath the bounty). The system must first earn the respect to be part of Pub.


Of course, that's all just IMHO - but strangely I think all that made quite good sense.
