Donation Money Idea

There's so many different strategies for tackling this problem, the problem that this game is going down the drain with population & interest. The biggest problem, the fact that the games client cannot be updated, really can't be tackled because we don't have access to the code. So we're stuck to make due with what we have, so the next best thing is to advertise the game.

There are so many different routes to go for advertising this game, but I think one unique way to do it would be to indefinitely advertise for the game for one fixed price. You're probably wondering how this would even be possible as advertising is generally not free. Well I have three ideas that I think are worth pursuing:
1) Establish a general gaming forum and take all members from TW to that forum, advertise all sorts of games but put focus on continuum.
2) Purchase an already established gaming forum and then start to advertise for continuum.
3) Purchase a domain that is highly valued, has direct type-ins and is related to online games.

Aside from paying for hosting, this is somewhat of a perpetual way to advertise for continuum instead of just spending money on advertising blocks on certain websites or various other ways to advertise that drains the money and one day the advertising is over and we're possibly in the same situation again.

I don't have any examples off the top of my head for options 1 & 2 but I can help you find some as well as evaluate any potential forums. I do have an example for option 3, and no this is not my domain nor am I in any way affiliated with the seller.

The actual website needed to be placed on that URL if purchased would be EXTREMELY simple. If anyone reading this is familiar with buying/selling websites and products, we could even do a squeeze page.

I think this is far more effective than doing SEO on our forum, or our game because the market for online games is very competitive. There are websites out there that pay you to play video games, it would be difficult to directly compete with that.


Edit: Side edit is that if anyone wants to they can donate to my paypal and I can assure you that it will go to TW, but as I do get payments from other things in my paypal you must put TW or trench wars in the donation info otherwise I won't know. I'm only stating this because if you actually send me money something will be done with it, it won't sit anywhere for a year or more. If nothing is done it will be because there isn't enough money, if this is the case I'll send it all back. I'll give updates on the account status in a timely fashion as well.

Domain names such as that can go from 6-7 figures easily. Even the amount of money we currently have wouldn't be enough to place a bid on one of those. Option 2 & 3 are out for this reason.

Option 1 sounds reasonable, but would that really be much different than our current forum? You said you want to focus on gaming over all though, which would be a different twists. I think option 1 is the only thing that you've suggested that is even somewhat reasonable, unless someone can get a hold of a decent domain for high direct type-ins at a reasonable offer.

We have 5k I thought? It wouldn't be that hard to raise an extra 2k I think to get it. Also, I'm not starting the forum heh, I'm not investing my own money, I've already donated plenty to TW many years ago, before they took down the donations page on trenchwars.org

Well, to be honest with you it's more of a proof of concept than a literal example. Even if it wasn't sold it would be before we'd have the 7k or whatever it takes. It's not the first nor the last example I can come up with

The donations money that we currently have is sectioned off into different categories, the majority of it is not in the "you choose for me" category. We wouldn't be able to use any other funds for this initiative besides "you choose for me"; only towards the areas the donors chose when they donated. We would still be considerably short.

Also, you're saying that you want to use the entire donations pot towards this goal and that you wouldn't "sit on it for a year". We didn't have 5k 1 year ago, we had 0k. It took a year to build up this amount. Now that we have this amount, we have quite a bit more options on what can be done.

This is also putting all your eggs in 1 basket approach, which I'm hesitant to do tbh.

How difficult would it be to go back and message the people that have donated and ask them if they'd be willing to reconsider the purposes for their donations? I assume that information would still be in the paypal.

What I'm saying is that I don't see a lot of clear initiative/direction and things getting done. To date, all I know about is that there are some website updates which, not everyone will agree with me here, but I think the money could be better spent. True you didn't have the money a year ago but I'm saying to this day, what has been done?

Yep, it is all eggs in one basket but it's very practical because if you were to spend the money on the domain, and have it turn out to not be effective you could sell the domain for essentially what you purchased it for and try something else. How many other ideas mentioned up until now can say that if it doesn't work you can essentially have your money back and start over?

The thing is, all the money isn't being spent on the new website. I'm restructuring SSBR, bringing in some fresh talent and new leadership (FieryFire is back). Things got done when he was in the drivers seat last time, I'm scooting over to let him take the wheel again on TW Advertising.

I'm not going to discount your idea whatsoever and I'm sorry if I came across that way.

We'll be doing regular updates to keep the public apprised of what we are working on in all fronts; if anyone is wanting/willing to help, and has some expertise that we can use, please let me know.

It's easy to criticize things that are being done, believe me I know, I ran TWD for over a year and people tend to come along and say that what has been done is poor or not good enough. Then they typically don't offer solutions or ideas, or to do the work themselves. Well I'm just saying that I think the idea of updating TW.org is a waste of money unless you've got some idea to integrate facebook with it, or something else that is going to cause the website to cater to a larger audience. Or, if you're planning on doing SEO work on trenchwars.org so that it shows up in the first page of google for "free online game" or some other long-tailed keywords. If you are planning on doing those sorts of things, then good job. If you're not then it's probably a waste of money. Just my 2 cents, I am criticizing but I am offering solutions and other ideas as well.
