  • Seeking Councils Input

Forum staff; sorry if this is on wrong area. The Council area isn't open to starting new threads.

Everyone is well aware of the current situation with the zone being down. A long standing TW policy is to not publishing offenders names when they are banned for breaking the zone rules. The Council doesn’t get involved in operational details so we don’t need to know their opinions on specific bans. But zone policies are certainly well within the area that the Council should have influence over. So let’s open this discussion and we would like to hear your opinions on this policy.

We are all fairly intelligent and understand the pros and cons of the current policy. Frankly I can only see one good reason for it; by keeping the names of those who are banned hidden you remove an incentive for some people to purposely get themselves banned just to make the ‘black list’. On the other hand there seems to me to be multiple good reasons to publish this information. Obviously transparency greatly helps remove the ‘us vs. them’ (staff vs. players) attitude that exists in the zone. It also greatly helps Captains make recruiting decisions. It would also save large amounts of time (i.e. look at the time the 2pac situation sucked. We had various staffers having to post what ‘really happened’ as opposed to all of us being able to look up the same info in a database/listing). But this is just my opinion; what we really want to hear from is the Council members.

So please weigh in; how do you stand on the current zone policy of not publishing banned people names? Please state your position and your justifications for that position.
    Thx

Pre-note: only council members can start threads in the council forum, but anyone can reply to them.

I'm not really for having a "police blotter" with all the warnings/silences/superspecs and low level bans listed, but high-level bans and netbans are something the community should be aware of IMO.

I think everyone should be made aware through a forum post on who the person was, it is important that we all know so that this person is not seen in a positive light to whoever befriended him before the incident. It finally exposes the type of person he/she is, a person that would go out of his way to attack a server many people enjoy spending some of their leisure time on, it's just a truly selfish act. It allows the person who was at the head of this attack to feel ashamed and ousted by the whole community, and when his netban is over and wants to come back everyone can voice their displeasure at what he did years back (if the game is still alive).

Although you believe this might actually create more attacks through people getting onto a black list - I'm directing this towards Left_Eye's comment- I think that is a horrible excuse for not letting us know who it is, IMHO staff members like to feel powerful by being the insiders and keeping us as the outsiders- oh the power struggle. It will actually show people that if they decide to act this way they will be cut off immediately (I believe it's called setting an example).

You could argue that by not listing the offender's name, people would be more prone to attacking the servers as their name would not be tarnished, and that their squad members could go on playing this game without anyone knowing one of their members was behind an attack. This shows that if a team were to lose TWL finals and their members were upset, a member who was thinking about retiring anyways could attack the servers on behalf of the squad because he/she will only be known by staff and that at least protects those that are on his squad, even if they were the ones who introduced the idea of him doing so.

In conclusion, yes we should be made aware of who the person was because it makes sense, because we are the people, BECAUSE WE ARE TW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
M_M God proposes a redo of TWLB finals for a fair outcome where neither team suffers due to the poor staff decisions, starters not being able to play, bot screw ups, server routing issues and lag. TWLB Season 18 was an embarrassment and Trench Wars deserves a fair and great end to the season.

zidane> Pandora (he really means zidane) does not agree with what you have proposed M_M god, because methinks dicE would win and I cannot live with that. I am just a big ole' puss.

after the first run-through reading this i stand in the pro side of not publishing the names because incidents of banning should really only between the specific person subject to the punishment and the staffers involved in the concern of privacy. in the specific case of 2pac, he had started a forum post regarding his situation that ignited debates and arguments that did not fare well for him. so i think what im trying to get here is the people who were punished should have their names withheld by staff unless they reveal the incident themselves. as of addressing the opposing side, usual squads would have more than one captain, so the captains could discuss among themselves whether to recruit this person or not

As much as I love most of you, I think we're trying to save a boat from sinking here when it's actually still afloat, to say it bluntly. I see discussions going on about releasing the name of the person who did it or not, while we're not even back up and running again as zone, haven't even had time to get our stuff together again, and most importantly, we do not have a perpetrator. Trust me, once we do know who did this, I would love nothing better than to bring this to worldwide attention and give his name/irl name and what not out to the public so they can all see what a disgrace this person is and what kind of sick things people do to a small, volunteer based community. But I think we're still far away from that, and I am not the one to call that at this point. Let the authorities do their work first shall we? I would be more satisfied if we can actually get the guy who did this into custody and behind bars for years and I could care less if he's publicly nailed to a cross or what not. If you want to discuss the future decision on as to release names of banned players, I will allow that, but please, stick to the actual facts for now.
