  • Bandwidth Consumption

    OK I might be tottally off but I tried to create an equation as to how much bandwidth the Trench Wars server consumes in 31 days. Here is my findings:

    2100 Terabytes is needed for one month to run SSCU Trench Wars according to DoCk>

    2.0 = 2 Kbps for 1 person
    60 = One Minute
    60 = One Hour
    24 = One Day
    500 = 500 People
    31 = One Month

    2.0 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 500 = 86.40 MB - Bandwidth for 500 people on for 24 hours.
    86.40 * 31 = 2.49 GB - Bandwidth for 500 people on for 24 hours for 31 days.

    Now these equations could be totally off giving me this amount, or maybe i'm just not good at math. Please throw out some other methods of getting a value of bandwidth usage for TW per one month.

    Those calculations don't seem too far fetched. I'd be willing to bet the TW server goes through closer to 5gb/month at least though.

      yeah i was thinking no more then 10 GB a month.

      If we could cut the bandwidth usage down to under 700 GB a month we could get a very nice hosting package.

        "2.0 Kbps" = kilobytes or kilobits?

              I believe the only flaw with that equation Pio is that the population never remains the same

                As he said, 500 people for 24 hours a day for 31 days.

                At times it has been more than 500 people for hours, and at other times it has been less. 400-500 is a good estimate for the number of people for his equation.

                  Keep in mind that the # of packets grows exponentially with the # of players.

                  For every packet you send to the server, it has to resend that packet (in general) to every other person in your arena

                    That is how, when I used to have 1 gig a month quota (up and down) I got screwed when I started to base

                      Well I was just trying to throw the point across that we shouldn't be using 2,100 TERABYTES a month. I mean seriously we should only be using maybe 50 GB a month at the MOST. Even at that the package I linked to offers 700 GB a month for under 200$.

                      And for the packets growing or whatever. How about I up it to an insane amount, 10 Kb/s sending to each person for 31 days straight.

                      10.0 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 500 = 432000000 or 411.92 MB

                      432000000 * 31 = 12.47 GB (UNDER 2100 TERABYTES)

                      Still not enough proof, how about 500 kb/s per person for 31 days straight?

                      500.0 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 500 = 21600000000 or 20.12 GB

                      21600000000 * 31 = 669600000000 = 623.61 GB (UNDER 2100 TERABYTES)

                      I want to get to the bottom of this, i mean our zone is going to die because we are using this insane amount of bandwidth a month. I personally don't want TW to die.

                        I bet DoCk>'s got a kiddie porn site sitting on the TW server somewhere. Those pedophiles love to eat up bandwidth.

                          TW uses around 1500 GB in a month

                              500 * 60 * 60 *24 *31 * 2KB = 2678400000 KB = 2615625 MB = 2554 GB = 2.49 TB
                              Go back to school :P
                              In reality there isn't 500 people in TW all the time indeed, so we are using 1.4..1.5 TB/mo
