The problem isn't where they fight each other. The problem is that they won't be fighting the defenders. Even if they fight in the base, their efforts will just cancel each other out. In such a situation, it's better for them to fight outside because then it's more likely for one attacking team to muster a slight advantage in the base to attack the defenders.
