    Which one?

    hello,
    forum gets overwhelmed by these threads, but help me out here.
    I have this Antivirus software, Norton Antivirus (2003), but I'm not sure if i'd keep it. People at school keep telling me Panda is much better and Kaspersky is free AND better.
    Since I don't know alot about this, help me out. Which antivirus software do you use? And is it good?

      I currently use McAfee, my college is allowed to give it out to the students for free.

      AVG (Which I had beforehand) once found a virus which had infected pretty much every EXE in my computer. It was unable to clean them though. I downloaded Kaspersky, which had the exact same problem, it could find the infected EXEs but could not clean them. I downloaded McAfee trial to clean the virus but somehow it missed a file which then proceeded to re-infect the EXEs again. McAfee had, I assume, marked these files as "cleaned" so when I rescanned, it did not flag them as infected so I was stuck. I then downloaded the Nortons trial version which cleaned it all up.

      The only reason I currently use McAfee over Norton's is because I can legally get it for free.

        Yeah norton is good if youre willing to pay a subscription, you can just crack it though.

            Norton is pretty good. I use it myself. No virusscanner can offer 100% protection though. Be sure to regularly use an online scanner, in addition to Norton, like TrendMicro's Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com).
            In addition to all that, install some spyware protection, like Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/). None of these are a substitute for good old common sense though

            One more thing: If at all possible, do not browse the web on an Administrator or Power User account, but rather with a Limited User account (without rights to install software). This limits the possibilities for unwanted software to install itself. If you do, for some reason, need to install software use the the Run As command.

              Personally I use McAfee VirusScan 8.0, it has a nice e-mail feature that has caught many trojans and virus's from Outlook. I also use these other scan site's once and a while. Hope this helps

                There are some very nasty things out there which you simply can't stop with the usual anti-virus software, even if it is kept up to date. This was the point of my last thread in tech support.

                The last one I had was a trojan. Not a mindless virus or worm that replicates itself endlessly, but something that was intended to take over my computer, which it did. Most trojans can just be detected and removed but this was not one of those. It was a "rootkit" trojan (dll trojans are bad news too) and the latest versions of norton, mcafee, AGV, kaspersky (and HouseCall) can't even see it, let alone do anything about it. It can hide any file, any process, and any registry stuff it wants, and not just from you but from most anti-virus and anti-trojan software. There seem to be some serious holes in MS software and the hacker software that allows people to do this is easily available and open-source.

                There must be people on the forums who know more about this kind of thing than me, who know about SSM and process guard etc. But I'm sure that just relying on any anti-virus software is not a good idea. There is other stuff you should do as well.

                  Anyone with enough brains can disable AV or a FW with virii, the best thing is not to take files from stupid people... get 2 or 3 different AVs better safe than sorry i guess...


                  then again there arent many virus's out there for linux, grab that muhahaha
