DSL is alot more stable, you won't get as many spikes. Your connection speed will always be the same.

Cable is alot faster in a way. If there aren't many people with cable around you, it's gonna be as speedy as hell. It's almost nice that you can usually combine cable TV and cable internet for a good deal

I saw an exception for this, that person is way outside this 1.5km limit, but can get ADSL. The bad news is that she gets packet loss in peak times, and cannot upgrade to a faster DSL deal. (She's using a standard ADSL package, 1mbit down)

And for that comment about "dont let ISPs figure out you're sharing your connection", bullshit - im aware of no ISPs disallowing sharing. In my areas, they almost promote it.
I live a lot farther than 1.5km away from the phone company building, and they gave us something called "Rural ADSL". It's 1500/128 but I really don't have any packetloss at peak times or anything like that.

              My story:
At home I have ADSL. My ave ping is about 100ms, 0.0% PL, might be 0.1% from time to time. So I'm absolutely lagfree .. ALWAYS !

During the week I live at another place, because I'm studying in that city. So I live on my own over there. I have a cable connection there. My advice: DON'T go for cable !!! It's driving me crazy ! Here is my ?lag at 6.40pm (the time I'm writing this)
              PING Current:130 ms Average:130 ms Low:70 ms High:530 ms S2C: 9.5% C2S: 0.8%
So my ping is just fine.. but my Packetloss !! It's only 9.5% now, there are times that it's 15% or even more. What can I do about it ? As far as I know : NOTHING.
So my cable connection is ruining every playing fun. I can't even play pub sometimes with my Packetloss, don't even think about TWD matches. I lagout like a stone. So the only time I can play "lagfree" is about 2-3am, my time.

              Conclusion:
              ADSL power!! Always lagfree !
Cable go to hell ! Lag like hell when you wanna play (when all the other ppl are online aswell)

I'll have to agree with BossHawk here; I had DSL for 6 months, getting a decent ping (190~220 in TW) and some awful spikes but then they set my neighborhood up for cable and I immediately switched. Now my ping is around 80~90 and it's never really spiked on me. I suggest trying both.

P.S. Cable is more than DSL where I live.

Yes, It all depends on if you have old people who dont know what the internet is, living around your neighbourhood. Then you will get little lag.

We might be switching to cable, so thank fuck the online gaming/l33t internet downloady community around where I live is incredibly small, the local LAN centre place is full of newbs too.

Where I live, cable and DSL ae the same price. I always recomend going with cable.

This is actually a different tech I believe.. I remember reading something about it going through powerlines instead of phone lines... could've been my imagination though...

I've heard that DSL gives you a better Download/Upload ratio but I can't be certain.

Recently I've had problems with my cable (online for 20 mins or so, offline for 20 mins or so etc..) but that's due to my ISP upgrading the network and I think it may have been fixed now.

It costs me £24.99 a month which I believe is about $45 - $50, but we have expensive internet in Britain compared to the USA

Rule of thumb. Cable for download speed and DSL for upload speeds.
"Bilbo" SS is a sophisticated chat channel, nothing more.
