My mate's uncle has told me about laptop processors:

I am considering getting an AMD micro laptop processor overclocked to 4.0ghz - wise decision? I'm not bothered about the warranty being redeemed void after overclocking... I am told by him that they run at 1.25v so when you overclock, you dont require any cooling equipment.

This is my biggest concern with this new PC. Advice?

    Thanks.

I wish I knew how to overclock. I don't even have a warranty.
    The pleasure's all mine.

          Total bullshit -period-

XP mobile (barton core) CPU's run at lower voltage settings by default, so they are easier to overklock than regular XP CPU's. Also some of these mobile CPU's fit regular Socket A motherboards, so they are used frequently for overklocking purposes. However, overklocking a mobile to 4.0 Ghz @ 1.25 volts is not possible and certainly not without extreme cooling.

the Mobile line of AXPs can be significantly overclocked (lower pr rated chips) say 1700+ to 3100+ on air cooling, however you will need to increase voltage from 1.25v to something closer to 2.0v.

also from what i have seen noone has yet managed to get a barton core anyhwere near 4.0ghz, slightly over 3ghz has been done with LN2 (well over -100C)

just as a point of reference, my old 2500+ thoroughbred core could do 3100+ with air cooling and maxed out at 3400+ equivelant speeds with vapor change cooling (-30ish C) with vcore at a unhealthy 2.1v.

first of all there is no way a modern processor can work without cooling, no matter if it's overclocked or not.

I had my Duron 800 running with passive cooling (no fan) when I underclocked it to 750-ish, but removing the cooler? no way.

No, obviosuly I would have a heatsink and fan. I meant without any extra stuff like turning it into a refrigerator.
