Some ISPs allow more than one IP address, but most of them probably charge a monthly fee for each additional IP address. If you are able to have more than one IP address, depending on the modem you have, you might be able to connect it directly to two computers (like my modem has the capability to be connected directly with a 10BASET and USB port simultaneously). If your modem doesn't have two connections but you can have multiple IPs, you can use a hub and connect the modem to the uplink port, or use a "reversed cable"(can't think of the term) if there is no such port.
If you cannot have multiple IP addresses, you can use software routers such as Winproxy, but they require a computer with at least two Network Interface Cards (NICs) so that you can route the internet access from one computer to the other(s) in your network. They seem to charge you quite a bit for these programs though, so I suggest getting a hardware router. Check eBay- you can find them quite cheap. I suppose I can suggest the Linksys BEFW11S4, for it's what I've been using for a while and it works quite well.

with a hub, u need 2 ip address's from your provider, some give u more then one automatically....
with a router, more expensive to buy, but u only need 1 IP address, cheaper in the long run... it splits it thru one IPWomen will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

The disadvantage of this approach is that you can only browse the internet on the secondary computer if, and only if, the primary computer (the on hooked up to the ADSL modem) is in use. The are many thirdparty applications out there that offer much more options and flexability than standard ICS, but the same disadvantage applies.
An other approach is the use of a router. Simply hook the ADSL modem up to the routers WAN port, hook each individual computer up to one of the router's LAN ports, enable DHCP and NAT on the router and you're good to go. Each computer can browse the net independant from the other.
Now, if you are in luck the ADSL modem has a built in switch that allows you to hook up more than one computer directly to it. If that's the case you needn't bother with any of the methods I mentioned above.Last edited by Fallen Angel; 09-10-2004, 06:55 PM.There's no place like 127.0.0.1

At my home I just have a 3com hub, 3 "straight" cables, one(from the ADSL modem) to the hub and the to others to my computers. Easier then that it can't get.. So I don't understand why you say to him to get 2 ip addresses.. Why make it compliacted when you can do it the easy way!
So you with 2 ip's, shame on you!Endless space, endless exploration.

When my sister came home from Uni, I did what FA said (Btw, if your ADSL modem can be used through USB, you will only need one NIC card in each PC.)
The only problem is that it lags you up a bit when both are using the world wide winterweb.USS Banana after years of superior jav play has amassed 17999 kills, he is 1 kill away from 18k, Type ?go Javs FOR A GAME OF HUNT (no scorereset) -Kim

I have a dynamic IP from my ADSL provider. I use a Netgear router. I didn't need to configure anything because it does it for you, since I use a DHCP server.
If you run windows 2000, or windows XP, you should have no problems sharing connections.
[boring crap]I remember back in the days when I tried to use a winmodem on linux. I was cool. I realized it didn't work, and there wasn't any drivers for winmodems on Linux. Now I don't use dial-up modems at all, and I'm still cool. [/boring crap]
PS: I posted this for attention.
