Windows XP and 98

I don't think there are any disadvantages apart from compatibility issues with older software and hardware.
If you are unsure, I suggest you create a partition on your HDD, so you can install 2 operating systems on the same machine. All it will do is ask you at startup to choose an OS to boot up with.Last edited by Mr. Peanuts; 01-18-2005, 12:17 PM.

Well you are after a OS to install in your pc isn't it... well its simple...
If you have a machine in wich you can spare more than 1Gb of free disk space for swapping and you have more than 256 Mb of RAM and you are just using your pc for easy office work and games/watching videos etc etc i would suggest that you use Windows XP Professional Ed (not the Home edition) if your machine is a bit old i would suggest windows 98 but i would suggest that you install Windows 98 SE as it has a MUCH more stable kernel and it avoids all those crappy blue screens and kernel pannic from the first edition.
If you want to use your computer for more serious work i would suggst that you install Windows 2000, its very stable but there are lots of games it doesn't support. About compatibility problems i guess that you will have problems only with software released before windows 98 that were specificaly made for windows 95 so i think you will not have much troubles on that part.A kiss is a rosy dot over the 'i' of loving.

People are mislead when it comes to Home and Professional, there are only a few advantages of choosing pro over home:
-Slightly Easier Networking;
-A bit more security;
-An option to encrypt your files;
-More advanced Remote Desktop Connection;
-More support for saving battery life (for laptops).
So unless you use a laptop or you want it networked, there is pretty much no reason to choose pro over home, as long as you have some good security programs installed.
Also- Isn't XP based on Windows 2000 and has pretty much the exact same compatibility issues as XP does?

Everything improtant works there - MATLAB, Visual Studio C++ (or similar), Maple, FTP server. Its enough for me and it works reliablyPlutarch: "To find a fault is easy; to do better may be difficult."

XP got better graphics.... BUT it's being said that XP is not so "safe" so hackers can get in easier than say.... WIN 2k/98.
I recommend WIN 2k and not 98 since 2k is like a more evolved version of 98 and I'm using it. Feel that it's great. But if I got to choose, XP is the best since I love the graphics and everything... looks nice. :PAcidBomber <ER> ^-^

I'd say go for XP, if you don't like the teletubby look (I certainly don't), you can quite easily make it look like win 98.USS Banana after years of superior jav play has amassed 17999 kills, he is 1 kill away from 18k, Type ?go Javs FOR A GAME OF HUNT (no scorereset) -Kim

Ouch ME sucks a lot.
I suggest you would install windows 98 SE its much more stable.
I guess ME is the worse windows ever done, it's always freezing and it has lots of strange problems...A kiss is a rosy dot over the 'i' of loving.
