Connecting Internet from Comp -> Modem.

Yup, how do I connect the internet straight from my computer to the modem?
I've been using a router, but I seem to have a FireWall so I cant do certain things with it... and no, I dont know how to fix it through my router since it's been causing the problem.

I have a cable plugged into my comp and connected to the modem, I tried resetting it, but it doesnt work. Anyone got any clue as to what I should do?!

My current ISP* (Canada) = Bell Canada (Sympatico).

I've also contacted my ISP for solutions but they havent replied.

Sympatico gives you a disc with the modem pack that you should use; but I have to say, it's much better to have a hardware firewall in place. We can help you fix the problems with it, if you tell us what they are.

Yes there's this disk, but you get all these other crap if you install the whole thing. I dont like using it if I can solve it this way.

the problem is my firewall or w/e is blocking transfering stuff on MSN etc etc. It goes so slow is not even funny so I'm really pissed when transfering "big" files that you cannot upload to any free upload providers. There's whole bunch of other stuff that's bad that I cant think of... oh yeh, sometimes it blocks some bunch of other stuff like download programs (Kazaa / eDonkey).

I use Sympatico too. I find that calling their help line is best, its quick. I had problems with my router before so I had to connect directly to the modem. Anyways, call the help line and they'll tell you how to fix it. If I remembered how to do it, I'd post it here, but meh, so yah call them up.

Also, for them to help you, you have to tell them your b1 (userid) which is located in that CD envelope thing.

You need your b1xxxxyy username and password.

I still suggest googling a bit to learn how to forward ports on your router. It would be worth it, compared to no router at all; trust me.

Ok, Stab, I went to that network thingy, I have another network (LAN) that's for my router.
But when I create new it doesnt have that "connect to the internet" function. I asked bahamut, he said i need to delete the LAN to make a new one. Is there another way to have 2 connection and choose from 1 to another?

If you go into the Network settings you can right-click on the LAN one and put "Disable".

I'm not admin. on my comp..... cant use that function.... btw, I cant play ss through my router neither... >_> my dad screwed it up and it blocks it.
Used to have Rogers, I just unplug my cable and attach it to the back of the Rogers modem and reset it, then it'll work... but it's different from the new Sympatico. :crying:

If you know how to forward ports, open up 5400 and 5401 UDP to be able to play TW and see it's ping in the zone list.

UDP 4990 to download new zone listings.
UDP 5400 to log into TW.
UDP 5401 to see the ping time for TW on the main screen.

If you open up the number after the : (UDP) then you can connect to the zone, and the number +1 to view it's ping time in the main menu. (e.g. for SSCX Powerball, you'd open up 8500 UDP and 8501 UDP).

Umm... you don't need to use port forwarding to be able to play subspace. Just open those ports for outbound access.

Is there a difference between port forwarding and opening ports? I honestly have no clue about this stuff, I just know which ports to open.

Ok, I'll try to make this as simple as possible.

Opening ports, you only allow traffic to go through the ports. There could be several rules applied here as to what type of connections are allowed etc.

Port forwarding, this is used with NAT. If you are behind NAT, your computer doesn't have an public ip address. Therefore, if you want to run a server, use p2p programs or stuff like that. You need to tell the router to forward those incoming packets to your computer. Because the users can only connect to you with the public ip address, which is the router. If you don't use port forwarding the packets will be dropped at the router, and people can't establish a connection with your server. Of course, the prerequisite here is that you have opened the ports from the firewall first, if there is one in use.

In short, port forwarding is used to make the incoming connection attempts go to the right place.

You have to look on Google. The steps are different for pretty much every router.

Just find out the brand/model of your router and google for something like "modelname port forwarding" or "brandname port opening" - you get the idea.
