  • CD Burner Help!

OK, it won't work -- heres the errors it gives me.

    Write Error, buffer underrun occured
    TrackWriter Error, command retry failed

any ideas? I recently cleaned the drive with one of those disk cleaners so it's not that it's dirty (it stopped working a long time ago, just getting around to it now.)

i fixed somehting that was wrong, but i still get the same two error messages. I'm out of ideas...

    I need some help

          Trying some ideas:
          • How old is it?
          • What was it that you originally fixed?
          • Are you burning from your hard-drive (not CD to CD)?
          • Can your harddrive deliver the data to your CD writer fast enough? (Nero has a test)
          • Try different CD-R media, e.g. from different companies, speeds etc.
          • Are you writing faster than your CD should allow?
          • Any processes in the background that could be taking up CPU time during the CD writing?
          • What software are you using to burn?
          • Could you borrow a friend's CD writer and see if that works? (If that works then your CD writer could be damaged)
          • Conversely you could test your CD writer on a friend's computer.

He seems to be foreign, and not great at english. I've found that quite often non-english speakers who have english skills below that of a native ten year old just kind of use english for the sake of it. And if someone opens their mouth just for the sake of it, that means just annoying people, swearing, rude jokes, just nothing at all worth reading. I know of several instances of this in SS.

However if he would be conversing in German, assuming that is his native tongue; he'd probably be interesting like a normal fellow.

I mean, I've never seen someone in these forums so consistently have nothing of value to say.

            Here's the proof right here.

agreed. going on what I've seen from him, he likes to think he runs tw's forums. they should put in some sort of warning system on forums and after you get to a certain warning level, you're automatically banned.
anyway, concerning your cd burner issue...your best bet would be to go through nockm's list of things to do and if nothing works, get a new burner.

                • Are you burning from your hard-drive (not CD to CD)? -- yes
                • Can your harddrive deliver the data to your CD writer fast enough? (Nero has a test) -- Uhh, I don't see why not, i tried to slow it down to see if that would work, but it didn't.
                • Try different CD-R media, e.g. from different companies, speeds etc. -- huh?
                • Are you writing faster than your CD should allow? -- I don't think so.
                • Any processes in the background that could be taking up CPU time during the CD writing? -- Yes and no, i'm sure thats not it.
                • What software are you using to burn? -- you mean company thingy? roxio I think.
                • Could you borrow a friend's CD writer and see if that works? (If that works then your CD writer could be damaged) -- again huh? ;p

Appreciate the help nokm, maybe that can clear some air?

                  * Can your harddrive deliver the data to your CD writer fast enough? (Nero has a test) -- Uhh, I don't see why not, i tried to slow it down to see if that would work, but it didn't.
Your CD writer has to store things in advance in a buffer, so that it always has something to write while the burning laser is on (like the anti-skip mechanism in portable CD players). "Write Error, buffer underrun occured" means that the buffer ran dry for some reason (so the laser didn't know what to write). Not directly useful but it might give you a few ideas on what could be interrupting the buffer being replenished.

                  * Try different CD-R media, e.g. from different companies, speeds etc. -- huh?
CD-Rs come in different brands, e.g. memorex, ritek, datawrite, kodak, etc... and each brand I think is physically different. So trying 1 disc of a different brand might help... but this issue relates more to DVD-Rs really.

                  * Any processes in the background that could be taking up CPU time during the CD writing? -- Yes and no, i'm sure thats not it.
Just in case as a last resort later, give ad-aware and other spyware destroyers a whizz.

                  * What software are you using to burn? -- you mean company thingy? roxio I think.
Maybe try Nero if you can get a copy (quite recommended), it might do some things a different way and work.

                  * Could you borrow a friend's CD writer and see if that works? (If that works then your CD writer could be damaged) -- again huh? ;p
                  * Conversely you could test your CD writer on a friend's computer. -- again huh?
Well as you know, your computer isn't the only computer that can run your CD writer. So maybe you could try putting it on a different computer and see if it works there. Basically I'm trying to figure out if the problem lies in your CD writer itself, or something in your computer.

I think I remember using a Roxio burner, and I had to choose from a selection of drivers... and you pretty much had to select the right one. Is that the case with your setup too?

Another thing, when does the error occur? Immediately when burning starts, or somewhere in the middle of burning?

I used to get this on my old computer, try closing all background processes, and if still no success try burning at a slower speed.

Do you use Nero Burning Rom?
I had exactly the same problem...haven't solved it yet
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal...

if your using xp try using the burn program built in. its really simple and takes about the same amount of time.

error always comes at 29% of total completion, regardless of the speed with which I run. I think the driver is amemorex and we use memorex cds (and it did work, but it stopped, so it's not like it didn't work from day 1)
