  • Loudening music

Ok, since I started my music collection, for some reaosn I always leveled it to 89dB using Mp3Gain (this made the tracks quieter than they were originally).

This is too quiet lately for me though, because when I try and listen to it louder on my speakers, it gets a 'scratchy' sound.

I tried making one of the songs, previously 89dB to 95dB. this seemed fine, and worked, but I'm wondering if there is any disadvantages to it, or if it only works for some (genre) songs.

I don't wanna 'louden' my whole collection and mess it up.

I've never really fiddled with the sound level, but maybe I should.

So does it fuck up some songs or is it safe to do?

I would recommend using an automatic normaliser rather than setting a maximum volume.

Why did you set the sound level down anyway? Can't you just turn it down normally?

i had some really loud songs along with some really quiet songs. when i was listening to a quiet one i would have to turn the volume up, and vice versa.

Mp3Gain recommened the volume 89dB because they said that it was a good "in-between point". After getting a computer with some speakers in myroom though, it isn't as loud as I'd like it (listening with headphones with this volume was fine)

the scratchy sound is usually because the song has clipping, i think this means that the louder notes in the song are too loud so your amp or stereo reduces the volume to prevent speaker damage.
anyway, i had the same problem so i reduced my whole music collection to 84dB with mp3gain and everything is now fine.
maybe try reducing the level of a song that gives you trouble and see if that helps.
i know u said the prob was with the song being too quiet but i don't see how that could cause any scratchy noises.

Amok: i mean when i try and listen to it too loud it gets a scratchy sound, so i'm, wondering if there is any danger of loudening thm

edify: yeah, i think i might just get new/more speakers

                        thanks

If you get a scratchy sound by turning the volume of your speakers up, then your speakers probably suck.

ok, i backed up my music and then tried loudening the files to 95dB (why didnt i think of that before?)

it is ok but the quality of the music isn't the greatest. still listenable though.
