  • Gamepad issues

Up on dpad needs to be prev player, down on dpad needs to be next player, left the map button and right the attach button.
Continuum won't let me do this, how do I go and change the dpads default faggotry to suit my needs.

Well, Continuum only accepts joystick buttons. If you can figure out a way for the dpad to be registered as buttons, then it will work. For example if you set the Playstation controller to the analog mode, dpad will register as buttons.

Have any of you tried to use Microsoft Sidewinder for SS/Continuum?

You mentioned that Continuum only accepts standard joysticks/gamepads.

      Oh just wondered..

It accepts everything that registers to windows as a game controller.

Through PS->USB adapter I've played Subspace with PS2 pad, but even more fun was when I played baseelim with a steering wheel (I went 8-10 too $) and I've also tried to play with a dance mat thingy. :P

Well Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad is not bad, has many buttons. I was thinking about gutting it and making a custom arcade style gamepad for playing SS.

Do you know if Continuum uses DirectInput? Sidewinder needs DirectInput to run.

I'm a bit lazy to install it now, but might check it out some time. I'm just so use to keyboard, a gamepad might mess me up.

lol, a dancemat to play SS, good exercise!

I've played with a PSX controller and I found it to be pretty horrible.

Would this directinput noise give me the dpad as a programmable set of buttons so I can attach and be able to bomb, mine, rep, whatever I decide to put there? It would be cool if you could use the keydef text file to set combinations of gamepad buttons as a command (such as boost+bomb=mine, boost+bullet=rep, like so). I can't get it to program anything besides direction to it and only by default (putting in the names in text doesn't work).

Well these gampades use USB usually, and need directinput. I'm not sure how flexiable Continuum is with gamepads more than 4 buttons. From what I gather, Continuum only recongnizes simple joystick/gamepads.

But I just thought of an alternative solution, but you would have to do hardware modifications and atleast have a basic knowledge of electronics.

I seen many websites with Arcade Controller mods, with many projects to make a custom arcade style control panel for your PC.

Anyhow, I wonder if this would work.

You can take some gamepad (digital one), and connect with wire to your keyboard to buttons that you use for continuum. I think this could be done, since keys/buttons are just switches.

Maybe drill a small hole in your keyboard, with wire leads to your gamepad. Keyboard is a matrix, so might be alittle tricky to solder to the keypads.

But this might be too involved for you and you might not have the equipment to do this.

The site above, has very thoroughly listings of many projects for making Arcade Controls for your PC.

lol, would be funny to use a neural link controller to play SS. Think some thought and you move, but those don't work quite well.

Well I take this input control for playing SS seriously, I might make some custom controller in the near future.

I've played with 16 buttons through USB.

Kuukunen, does Continuum let you assign what each 16 button does?

Well if that works, then that Sidewinder gamepad should work. Have to test and see...

Yes, it should. When I used the PSX -> USB connector, I could use all (16) buttons.

Meh, have you even once looked at the key defs screen? :P

Anyways, this is how it works: You go to the profile and then click the key defs button. On that window, there's this checkbox with the text "Joystick/Gamepad" next to it. Check that, and you will be able to assign joystick buttons as keys for anything. (moving, macros, etc) The buttons won't replace the ones on keyboard, so you can use the same key defs for playing on gamepad and keyboard. You can put there anything that is handled digitally, including the hat thingy. The main x-axis and y-axis are for movement, you can't change that, but you can define other buttons for it too. So if you define movement buttons for keyboard and pad buttons, you can have three alternative methods for moving.
