avi's in windows explorer crash

whenever i'm looking at stuff in my "my movies" folder and there are .avi's inside an error pops up telling me that the window must be closed. and then the error report thing asking if i want to report or not. and this is really annoying because i watch movies a lot.

help please. (not virus scan -i did that already)

Try installing a codec pack, or making your "View" something other than "Thumbnail", since it acutally opens the video so you can see a "preview".

it doesn't really matter even if i switch it to "details" or "list" because once i single-click on the file the error comes up.

about that...i don't. hence why i probably have the cleanest computer in my dorms, dipshit.

scans of the rutgers antivirus (modified mcafee) and microsoft antispyware and spybot find nothing. it's ANY avi file.

i use vlc media player and i guess it comes with its own codec or something.

i dont like editing registry keys but i found this solution from a site where many other people have the same problem.

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

basically my computer was freezing up whenever there were divX avi files in the folder and xp was trying to load the movie as a thumbnail, which usually is a very big file. the reg command deactivates that dll that tries to load media in the thumbnails.

it works fine now.
