Disk Defragmenter

Hello there,

I've been trying to get my disk defragmenter to work but recently it cant get past analyzing, because of some file in my recycling bin. but the thing is I can't find the file that it is talking about. ive selected the folder option that enables me to see all the files in the given folder but there is still nothing. anyway this can be solved?

You mit need to run scandisk.

I also notice that both disks are formated in fat32

you should convert these to NTFS (unless you have a specific need for FAT32) for 2 reasons

1. if ya computer crashes it is much less likly to corrupt ya hardisk and in ntfs u hardly ever have to run scandisk.

2. ntfs is way way way faster to defrag. and less likly to fragment.

and I checked for hidden files, it doesnt show up

it's like spring cleaning, really. it takes all the messy hard-drive files and re-arranges them on your hard-drive so your processor can work more efficiently.

Sometimes files that you save are too big to save in an obvious spot on your hard drive. Lets say you have a 400 meg file and all the empty spaces on your hard drive (there are tons all over the place) are only 5 mb each. The computer will have to write your 400 meg file in 80 pieces. Computers take a lot longer to read 80 pieces of a file than one long piece.

This problem is exacerbated if you have very little disk space left. If you have very little disk space left the machine uses whatever space it has left over. This can become very bad very quickly.

With windows machines... keep lots of empty space around, and defragment at least once a month.

Lol I was gonna tell you to scandisk, but someone got to it before me. Yes you should get the ntfs system. For some screwed reason my sony ra came with a fat32 harddrive, and I didn't really notice untill a friend pointed it out. I immediately reformatted it to a ntfs, and it's running alot better now.

PS: Sony Vaio RC is the absolute best.

Or u can use mine :P :

in a command box (start -> run -> cmd -> OK) you will need to type (where c: is the drive letter to be converted)

convert c: /fs:ntfs

It then normally asks you to restart the computer. After you restart it will start the conversion process. You dont have to do anything then untill it finisishes.

Just make sure you do exactly as it says on screen - it can take a while like an hour or so to convert the hard drive. What ever you do dont reset or turn off your computer while its converting otherwise you'll be fucked <_<

Say you have two files and delete one of them:

And now you want have to write a big file. There is not enough continuous space so the file is fragmented.

Defragging collects the fragments.

To do this, a defragger uses the unused space on your HD to shuffle pieces around and write them to better locations.

Good defraggers also write frequently used files closer to the beginning of the HD for fastest access of those files.
