  • Make undeletable?

I'm scared that y sister will one day accidently (or on purpose, if she's pissed at me) delete my stuff on the computer, including my collection of songs. Is there a way to make a folder undeletable on Windows XP?

why dont you just burn it onto some cd or dvd? or a 2nd hard drive, its never a bad idea to have a backup anyway (especially when its your music, i cant imagine to loose it all). unless you have no burner this is prolly the best idea anyway

I'm not too sure, but why not make a separate account for her, and put a password on yours. Make her's a non-administrator account so she can't wander around in your hard drive, and delete important windows, file, or even access your files. That's what I did, and it worked. Now she has her own comp so its no worries. Also I'm not too sure with this, but make the file read-only. So you can't delete it, and when you want to add a song onto it just make it temporarily editable.

Your sister is a bitch. Kill her.
It's not whether you win or lose.
It's how you place the blame.

Folder settings... I believe if you make it a .zip file you can add a password to it.. I remember coming across something like that

Yeah theres one harddrive.. it's the disk you mean :P.. and it's true you could net the files into a slave drive.. I have 2 drives on the same physical drive (It seperates my Windows files from my personal ones).. Yeah Dock> could explain it a hella lot better

              How about an external hardrive?

You can plug it in to a USB when you're at your pc at when you're not you can hide it in a shoe box under your bed.

I found out I'm getting a laptop as a present before I'm going uni. I think I'll just wait until then and take my chances.

I suppose it's not so much my sister, but her fucking friends that mess shit up on the computer.

                Thanks anyway!

Here's another way, but its a bit more effort each time.

Right click on the folder and choose "hidden" then choose "Apply changes to this folder only" then choose OK.

Then go to my computer, go to Tool -> Folder Options -> View and make sure "Do not show hidden files and folders" is selected.

Chances are your sister doesn't know enough about computers to change this setting.

Later when you want to access your folder you can type out the location of the hidden folder (ie. C:\Music\) and it will go to it, or u can go back to folder options and change it to "Show hidden files and folders" each time.

Hard drives, CDs, and DVDs all have life spans. HD is 3-5 years. You should back stuff up or you will eventually lose it, sister or no sister.

I tend to think I have backups on the internets.

                          short answer - no

long answer - you can make it more difficult :P but it involves arsing about with windows file permissions...and you need to have separate logons...etc....

Yeah, make separate user accounts, there's no need to make her a 'user' rather than an 'adminitrator' (seriously, you can't do anything as a normal user), put a password on your user area and just select the little box that asks if you want your files made private. As long as theyre confined within your 'My' folders, like My Documents, My Music, My Videos etc, they will be completely impervious to her haxing skillz.
