I might be getting a laptop for Christmas, but I don't know anything about them (or computers in general).

Any ideas for what brand to get, which site to purchase from, etc?

I'd use it for gaming, working, storing files, and a big screen would be nice

Battery life was my main consideration, 3 hours was no way going to be enough for me.

      I considered 3:

1 - The one I bought, for 700, the Sony Vaio B3VP - no problems, good laptop, chose this one because 14 inch is a good size, i can get 5-6 hours out of it at normal use, and the keys are a good size.

2 - the one I would buy if i was buying one now. The Sony Vaio T1XP. Was 1500 3 months ago, is now 1000 from ebuyer. Nice little laptop, stunning resolution, great connectivity, and once again about 6 hours battery.

3 - various IBM Thinkpad models, purely for the battery life and good keyboard design.

That Sony Vaio T1XP is around the right price (I'm not paying for it - it's a gift from grandparents). Thing is, it only has 40GB memory. I have over that in just music on my PC, which I'd like to copy over to the laptop ideally.

Vaio's are great laptop's, especially if you are looking for a small yet powerfull pc with a nice battery life, i've had 2 of them and never had problems so i can say that you probably won't be disapointed. About the music issue.... well you can always buy an external disk or just selct some of your music... cmon why would you need more then 40 GB of music in a laptop

hm, yeah, I guess I'm not going to get a bigger HD in a laptop. guess I'll have to suffer :/

My friend's brother has a Vaio - looks nice. I'll def consider getting one.

              thanks
