Portable HD

That's basically $150 for a portable 60 gig 7200 rpm HD.

I bought my external HD on ebay. I believe it ended up about $110-$115 with S&H and it has 200 GB. I was initially worried about quality but a year later it's still working (knock on wood). It's apparently just one that somebody built.

Next time I won't buy one built but instead build my own since it's cheaper. My roommate knows how to do it and tells me it's not very difficult.

EDIT: Wow those Best Buy ones are pretty cheap; I didn't see any that cheap in their store. I'd go for one of those.

Suff, 2.5" drives are the smaller laptop size. You should be able to find 3.5" enclosure + drive that's the same price as the Best Buy ones.

I was looking for an enclosure that was externally powered (had AC adapter) and had USB and Firewire (Firewire is faster).

For the HD, try and get as big a cache as reasonable (8M). The HD price will be best in the "middle". Too small or too big you will be paying more of a premium per GB.

Thanks geek. I'm going to wait until the end of the summer to get a HD + enclosure. But I think I'll go with the Seagate Barracuda line (prob get the same model as you did) and a diff enclosure. The advice about HD cache helped a lot bc I see that some of the external HDs have like 2 or 4 mb cache.
