Install Itunes, when you plug in the player, it recharges and you can put songs into it. To get the message away, get into Itunes and click at the EJECT icon next to the ipod name.

EDIT: Shame that you just bought one, I heard rumours (which is most likely to be true, google it) that another nano is coming, with 8 GB and with some kind of metal coat (like the mini) that makes the player more durable, making it harder to scratch it. The price is prolly gonna be close to the current nano, or a little bit more expensive.

I find it funny that someone in other forums asked this same question 4 hours before you.

And the answers in that were 'download ipod updater and reset your ipod with it, perhaps you have to format it first' and 'I had the same problem, nothing helped and I had to take my nano back to apple for maintenance'.

When you do this you have to do it like when you format a floppy disk. Worked for me when it was problems.

Just wanted to say this becuase i coudnt find this part in the support section when i had problems. I had to use Apple forums.

The problem is iPod updater doesn't detect the iPod and gives some bullshit error message, so I can't roll it back to factory settings. iTunes won't even open if the iPod is plugged in. I called the apple people and they basically told me to mail the shit in to fix it. If anyone has a better solution please explain it to me.

                  Wow, that really sucks. <_<

If it's your first Apple product don't get too discouraged. I've had a few iPods and have never run into any problems. They're pretty cool and generally stable.

I'm on Windows XP, and sumpson I used to have a Zen Touch but that got a little too dated for me.

I still got the Zen Touch, works perfectly with 20GB, it's not the most beautifull mp3 player, altho the newer ones are better looking then the iPod's.

everyone has an iPod so the look doesn't matter much anymore anyway since you won't impress anyone with how good it looks. I guess you care about this since you think the zen touch is outdated.
Creative focuses on Audio, they are much better at it then Apple.
