W2K upgrade to XP Pro...unstable!

Before you blame the Window, remember this could very easily be a hardware problem.

It was a hardware problem. It was an aging HD that I have beat the hell out of and probably punched a few holes into the O.S. It became noisey and was not stable at the end.

why upgrade from 2k to xp. 2k will run everything xp does. They are practically the same OS :P Only difference is eye candy.

Eye candy perhaps, but the boot time for W2k vs. XP is vastly different. W2K annoyed me to no end on boot-up time. There had been other features that XP had that I like over W2K asides from eye candy. W2K is stable and I cannot argue that point. If I had a Pentium 3 Class or an early Pentium 4 Class Processor than I would have stayed with W2K, but I have a P4 3.4ghz system and not an older P4 as is on one of my older systems (still running W2K) on a P4 1.2Ghz.

For example, I had problems running dual monitors on W2K and had absolutely no probs on XP Pro. There had been other issues as well, and I am sure I could probably have made it work with a little work, but f' that. It's also not like I upgraded from W2K to XP Home...I did upgrade to Pro.

Overall...I like the way XP Pro handled, over W2K. Just a preference I guess.

As for the new HD I put in yesterday running Vista Pro, I am liking it! It has taken a little bit of time to get used to it, but overall it is not bad at all. Just upped my RAM to 2 gigs and am now looking at getting a new video card to take advantage of this O.S., as the Nvidea GeForce 5800 is ok...but I would definately like to drop a new GeForce 7950 1GB overclocked card on to my board.

Basically I have too many computers to mess around with and my jump to Vista was a curiosity step for me...as for the old HD that pushed me to this, it is running as a 2nd HD file serve and I have backed up all my files I needed.

The old HD that caused all these problems is getting flakey...it's 4 yrs old and has become rather noisey...it was time to move on before that HD just plain out failed.

I fixed a very similar problem by booting a different HDD/OS, then just run chkdsk on it. Chkdsk'ing it itself didn't work for me either.

But yea, like you say, that means buying another HDD.

it was right after i installed so its not very custom, but still interesting. after getting into it it looks waaaay cleaner now. im wondering when the hell those vista "ultimate extras" moving desktop backgrounds will come out. i saw some previews of it on TV and it looks sweet.

Already thought of that...already doing the driver checks on all the PnP. I would not try and use anything (drivers) that run off an executible from the old drive.

This will be an evening of re-installs, downloads and updates

The eye candy is ok so far...not bad layout. I just need to get use to this. Office 2007 wasn't bad, so I hope this isn't.

F it all....just got a new West. Dig HD and loaded Vista Pro on it...am using old HD as storage drive and am able to get all my old files still.

So now I will get a 1st hand look at how Vista works....can it be any more of a nightmare than my upgraded from W2K to XP Pro was?

I am a glutten for this kind of crap.

Went through all of this:

Safe Modes (all of the choices)
Last Know Good Config
every possible choice...even using the MS sites help, of which was uselss too.

Put in a copy of XP pro and loaded all the drivers, recovery console, even tried the boot discs I made...all useless. Info is intact on the drive, this I know. So to save that info...images, doc.'s and so on...I am loading a new hard drive as my master and using this f'd up one now as the slave....seems that this is my cure all...and will give me an extra 120 gigs of space

Are you sure there wasn't a more friendly error_message (somewhere around the second line); something like IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ?

Yea, if all else fails a clean install would always solve the problem and it will be a good starting point for the future aswell.

The only thing I have learned from this, is that upgrades from W2K to XP Pro are not the best route and I will keep that in mind if I ever go the route of Vista!
