  • Vista showing 0 physical memory available

    eVGA nForce 680i mobo
    Intel E6850 @ 3.0Ghz
    4 x 1GB Patriot Extreme DDR2 800mhz RAM
    eVGA GeForce 8800 GTX
    2 x 74GB WD Raptor HDD

I am running Vista 64-bit. I noticed in the task manager that the available physical memory is sitting at 0 while running Everquest 2...yet it runs just fine. If I quit EQ2, it sits at 0 for a while, and eventually goes up to only about 500mb available. I'm really not noticing any problems, except I did get booted from EQ2 for some memory error. It doesn't really help that I have no idea what the memory error was and can't seem to find it in Vista's Event Viewer (Go figure).

    Any ideas?

    Nevermind. I figured out why.

Refer to "Superfetch" and Vista for more information.

Vista uses your spare RAM, it's a good thing.

        Question

I understand super fetch's purpose, at least I think I do.

But Worr's rig has 4 GIGs of RAM, he's only playing Everquest... unless he is running a hell of a lot of background services or something, why would it use so much memory?

Is there something else going on here I'm not understanding? And if you're getting a memory error, is that because of superfetch? I'm no expert on Vista but I have used it plenty, and with your setup I'm not sure how Windows can drop you down to 0 phyical memory playing a game like that?

Just curious, any have any thoughts or answers for me?

Superfetch grabs all the memory resources it can so they can be accessed faster...It is said to be 37x faster than pulling free memory.

Everquest 2 has issues with Vista...Apparently all textures you walk by are saved in memory, but it doesn't wipe old textures out...you can imagine after an hour of play you'll run out of "free" memory. Still no fix for this.

All is right in the world. Regardless of how much memory you have, you should see in Vista that it's using most, if not all, of it.
