  • Partition question, and other Vista newbing.

I'm working on getting my new computer good and ready, so I'll probably have a bunch of questions since I'm new to Vista.

15gb was way too little to have on my c: drive, so I was wondering if there are any good ways to change your partitions in Vista?
I got like 80gb free on another drive, so I just need a good, Vista-working program to move some space over to C:.

How does Dx10 work? I've tried downloading it from the Windows site, but it only gives me Dx9c, even if I click a Windows link to Dx10. What gives?

There's TONS of useless "safety" features that is built in with Vista, like having to confirm several actions, like running programs and deleting programs. Is there some general options where you can tell Vista to gtfo with this annoying shit?

Also, this confirms that I'll be back in the next few days.

    Disable UAC

I don't quite understand your partitions question, so I'll let someone else answer that.

To get rid of the annoying Vista prompts,
    - Go to Control Panel -> Security Center
    - Under the Other security settings tab, turn off User Account Control

you can't just move free space between partitions... you'd have to reformat/delete both then recreate them in the sizes you want.

or you could just buy a larger hard drive and install windows/linux on that.

        Example of a partition program:
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PartitionMagic

I've heard that it isn't recommended to use, but that was ages ago, and it might not work for Vista at all.

I've poked some about, and I found out that Vista has some built-in tools to do this shait for me.

            http://vistarewired.com/2007/02/16/h...windows-vista/

The only thing I'm unsure about is how well it's working, I've heard that changing partitions outside of standard removing and reforming can be bad. Never heard anything on why, so if anyone can tell, shout out.

I had Vista for a bit on my pc but back to XP cus of the bugs in Vista.
The partioning stuff inside Vista could work, never tried though, but it's always risky to resize ur HDD when you have files on it. This is because when you gonna resize it there can be a chance files get deleted while doing it. If you are gonna try it I should (if I were you) burn some dvd's to back it up. Or reinstall Vista if you gonna do that one then I suggest you only use one partition of 80GB sinse it's pretty fast full and 60-20 ain't all that neither is 40-40.

                Hmm, thank you.
I really don't have anything that sucks to lose on my E: drive, so if that's the only risk then I'll go for that.

Now the only thing I have no clue about is DirectX. I've always installed the newest DirectX after formatting, so I did this now as well. This was DirectX version 9c. I've heard that Vista is shipped with Dx10 after I installed 9c.

If I already have Dx10 shipped, then why did not the installer detect that and tell me that I already had a better version? It's always done so in the past. Right now I'm semiworried that I've overwritten the Dx10 that Vista comes shipped with. Can someone please drop a few lines about that?

Terminator: What bugs did you change to XP over? Why do you think XP is better?

The included partitioning tools in Vista are surprisingly pretty decent. I used them to create a 2nd partition in order to dual boot with Ubuntu and had no problems at all. Later down the road when I wanted to delete my Ubuntu partition (apparently my mouse and wireless adapter aren't supported) and reconsolidate it back with my main partition, the Vista tools did it quite nicely. Nothing was overwritten or damaged in the process.

So, I say go for it.

I tried to remove some space from E: and then add it to C:, but the space I removed were only usable for the same partition, or a new one (I only have one disc, so no issues there).

Re: DX10, it comes with Vista, there is no "installer" for it.

Just to confirm this, Start -> type "Dxdiag" (yes that search box is pretty much a "run" box, but for ALL your programs).

On the main bit of Dxdiag, it should say near the bottom:
                        DirectX Version: DirectX 10.

Yeah, I already did this, and found out that this wasn't an issue. Good advice tho, was just what I were looking for earlier.

Right now, there's no real issues, most of them are gone.
