Text doesn't show in Halo CE

I've recently downloaded Halo Custom Edition (A Bungie release, not Microsoft) and have been enjoying playing it online and on our LAN. I have one problem though, in-game text doesn't show up.

I don't get any "you killed Dave" messages. And when I press T to chat, there is no writing. I can type and my opponents can see what I have written, but I can't see it myself. Menus and such work fine.

It's incredibly annoying cause it means I don't know if I have killed someone, and also don't necessarily know who killed me.

I have re-installed the game several times and my graphics drivers are up to date. I'm on Vista and have an 8800GTS.

Any ideas?

I have no helpful suggestions except that you should try the HALO CE INTERWEB FORUMS, NOT TRENCH WARS 2D SPACESHIP GAME FORUMS!
