i just "finished" installing vista for the first time, what a nightmare. There is nothing that bugs me more than a loud computer so i was pretty shocked to hear the HD spin and crack constantly under vista. After some reseach and time i finaly found what causes it. In case anyone ever experiences the same, these are the evil things that cause HD noise under vista:

• Windows Defender, i hate active virus checks anyway
• Indexing, what the hell who needs to index 50GB of software. what were u thinking bill?!
• Background Defrag. Maybe ill try this one later. Maybe its not so dumb
• Superfetch, supposed to get quiet after a while, but atm i can still hear it rattle

if i turn it all off its 100% quiet.

You can schedule the defrag to run whenever you want. I have mine set to do it after 2AM. I also leave my system up and running all the time.

Defender...uhg...I disabled it. Have Trend PCCillin on mine and will most likely switch to Avast after the script runs out. Free licenses from work or I would have gone with AVG

Will have to try that out.. even though my HD silenced down after a few days of Vista and I haven't done any of that, yet.

I only had one small issue with Vista when I first got it.. and that turned out to be a simple fix; download graphics drivers and reinstall. Sorted.

Vista is great, it's easily on par with XP.

Windows XP Tiny Platinum by eXPerience, Customizable comes with reg files to double click that control amount of services, comes bunddled with software such as nero lite, a lite firewall you can install before even turning on the modem, automated registry tweaks and more

must have motherbaord CD instead of a "product recovery" CD or Partition in order to change your OS. if you dont, you are just screwed.

when you order blank computers from online computer builders, you get a motherboard CD instead.

otherwise, how are you supposed to change to XP then make your nvidia and stuff work?
