I need to connect my old PC, running XP Pro, and my new PC, running Vista Home Premium. I want to do this with a crossover ethernet cable, which I have. I am not interested in advice that directs me to use a switch/router. I know how to do that, but I'm not moving equipment around. I have visited myriad links on interwebs and none have provided any resolution. I have a large amount of data and a USB external will probably take a day. Finally, I just want to make this work so I can put to use this crossover cable I made today.
Here is the setup:
XP computer:
Static IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway and dns are blank
Username and password match Vista
Workgroup name: Renamed to WORKGROUP and computer restarted
Firewalls off
All relevant files I want shared have sharing turned ON.
Computer name: admin
Vista computer:
Static IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway and dns are blank
Username and password match XP
Workgroup name: WORKGROUP
Firewalls off
Network discovery ON
File sharing ON
Computer name: owner
I ran this setup with all network adapters disabled except for one on each computer (in which the crossover cable was connected)
I can successfully ping 192.168.0.1 from my Vista PC. When I type in \\192.168.0.1 into the RUN box, it pulls up this:
I have tried the following:
Usernameassword
ADMIN\Usernameassword
FUCKOFF:FUCKYOUWORK
I'm really at a loss. I feel like there must be something easy I am missing. Any ideas??
