Maybe you should update your driver. Run an anti-virus program.. Make sure no proccesses are running that you don't need.

Are there any other side affects..
    Like.. Computer screen shaking
    Computer restart on its own
Computer counts down from 60 before it shuts down..

Before i got windows xp my older computer did that shit your talking about.. I just need to know if its the same thing.

Okay, it's not really an answer, but if they value being able to work on their machine, I suggest dumping Win98 at some point soon. It's a steaming pile of crap.

Now, to fix the problem you're having... is it a serial or a PS/2 mouse (is the connector on the mouse trapezoidal or circular)?

the mouse is like a square but it's got a little adapter thingy that turns it into circular... it's also an optical mouse.

ice storm, i have my own computer (there's 4 total in the house, out of that only one has xp) but my parent's computer is funked

i did run pccillin in safe mode, but it didn't detect anything

and if the mouse runs in safe mode, wouldn't the driver be fine?

an no, it's just stuck in high/16 color mode with no mouse... there's no screen shake or anything... and there's no warning on startup that says "windows does not detect a mouse" or anything, and the red light on the mouse is on

If the mouse does work in safe mode then that might mean a driver/s or system files could be courrpt. Safe mode doesn't load the normal working system files. I would do what Conc said dump 98 and go with XP or reinstall 98.

Edit:If you have done an up to date virus scan, then theres no need to even open the registry editor unless a virus has been found. With Windows 98 theres no going back with system restore so I wouldn't touch it either way. Scan with adaware but I doubt it will make any difference. Reinstall or upgrade :\.

Check your Registry Editor for anything suspicious in some of the key folders. Also look in your %Systemroot% for anything peculiar or unusual.

Another possibility is that you have some adware that installed the software that would change the cursor such as Comet Cursor (I believe that's what it is called). Scan for adware too.

Just a note- if/when you check your registry, DON'T try to edit anything unless you ABSOLUTELY KNOW what you're doing. You might cause permanent harm.

And if you do feel like dabbling, it's always a good idea to back it up first.

What you mean is that your mouse is USB, with an adapater to become PS/2 and USB devices DO NOT work while in safe mode because windows doesn't load the drivers for it. So what you need is a REAL PS/2 mouse and keyboard then you will be set.

                      later,

I would back up the files and format the computer. Then you could either put Win98 back on or upgrade to XP.
