Cont 'steals' my surround sound channels

I'm using a 5.1 sound setup. The problem is: After Continuum loads, all other programs can only use the front two sound channels from my 5.1. This means that if I want to put on some music mid-game, I get no sub-woofer bass and no L+R surround, which sounds soft and tinny. Basically, if I want to put some music on mid-game, it sounds crap.

I only have this problem once I load Continuum, and it's gone when I quit the game.

I'm using an sound-card integrated into my motherboard: SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio on an Intel D845PEBT2 motherboard. Thanks for any help.
