A staffer deleting the source code is almost as good an excuse as hl2's source code being stolen. Doesn't anybody keep backups of the stuff for god's sake? :detective

Its frustrating to write these lines after every post^
I'd hope there would be another way..like some automatic system that fills them itself after every post.

So why not use the code from last year? Or the year before?

Sounds like you guys enjoy re-inventing the wheel every TWL.

Doesnt TWD have automated bots? *cough* code-reuse *cough*

Um, I may not be right into this code shit or bot-making, but I assume, from a personal standpoint, that the previous bots were flawed. Why fix somethin' that ain't broken? Why take extra weeks to pour all this effort into the bots, and just shrug and say, "ah well, we tried, let's use the fucked up bots again, who cares?"

Besides, don't you think that what you just said has been suggested before? I always found it amazing how everybody always knows a simple solution... even when there is no problem.

the simple solution is always the right solution. correct me if im wrong, but what was wrong with the old bots? they crashed occasionally, right? it takes less time to debug those crashes than it does to re-write all the code from scratch, right? the only acceptable (maybe) reason to re-write all code from scratch is if its bad design. if you have to re-write all code from scratch multiple times, you need to fire the head developers.

look, we had the bots from last twl, the bots from the twl before that, twd bots, god knows however other many bots. are you saying that their design was that bad that no code could be re-used?

i've had this conversation with someone before and it came down to the fact that the bot core wasnt well designed. is there anything wrong with that? no. someone just has to design it right ONCE and not spend 6 months coding the same thing over and over every TWL. hell, i'd do it, but i dont think that the problem is with the design, its with staff.

I don't think the bots were entirely rewritten, if they were then the bot coders had good reason to do so. In any case the coders needed the time to work on the bots because crashing 2-3 times per game as in season 7-8 just doesn't work. It delays games until week11, causes both coders and hosts to spend twice as long on their games and causes 20 times the bitching 2-3 weeks has caused so far. On top of this the code for connecting the bots and database was deleted by a departing Smod aswell bugs in the core which were focused on before work went into TWL needed to be fixed while rebuilding the entire group of coders.

I think you're still under the impression that TWL started months behind schedule top, in reality the bot problems and other things delayed TWL for 2-3 weeks.. Nothing more.

If the bots werent rewritten (which i think they were), why did it take till april to start anything? Youre right, crashing 2-3 times is bad... but how many years ago was that? If you cant fix a couple bugs in *YEARS* time, then you shouldnt be writing bots.

Dunno, I remember people talking about starting TWL back in december, then january, than february... and now its almost may...

Code for connecting the bots to the db should be the same as the TWD code, cept with slightly different db-schemas (if that).

I've already explained the problems why TWL started later. Deleted code, 2 high development staffers leaving, lots of changes to development staff, fixing TWLBot, problems with the core, recruiting more developers... Probably a lot more but all in all I think given that starting 2-3 weeks later is actually... kinda good.

Last season (8) and 7 both had many problems with crashing and I know for at least one week scores were manually inputted, it wasn't years ago. The offical start date was late Feburary. Someone was optimistic and said December, October ect.. after season 8. I'm sure TWL staff is not going to make that mistake again. Everything else, neither you or I code for this zone. You should know as well as anyone else Top that there are always extenuating circumstances when programming.
