How about 8 squads, 4 squad playoffs, but during regular season each team plays each other team 2 times. TWL season becomes a little bit longer, squads get more of a chance to upset better squads, and better squads get the opportunity to redeem themselves if they were previously upsetted.
Come playoffs, make each play off game best 2 of 3 to 15 minutes with 4 squads.
Finals, same as usual.
A separate idea just for finals is to structure it so you have a second week of finals if necessary. Say week A is finals and one squad wins both games, then TWL is done and we have a champion. But if both squads each win a game, we can have the super-awesome-ultimate-best-of-best finals game the following week, giving players on both teams a week to rest up, work on some secret tactics, buy some performance-enhancing drugs. Then in week B, it'll be one game, winner take all. Both teams have two weeks to finally show their best.
In terms of scheduling though, this may or may not work depending on if this falls on a holiday or not (hello christmas, new years).
