Impala vs Thunder: 41-50
This turned out to be a surprisingly close game. Impala has yet to win a game this season but they have come relatively close on several occasions; this was one of them. About midgame, Thunder seemed to fall apart and had a less than mediocre performance. Luckily, led by Fludd (12-6) and Ceyve (12-7), they managed to pull through in the end and reclaim the first seed in the TWLJ standings. Sodly (4-10) had the only poor performance on Impala’s end. Although they have not yet won a game, I have to give respect to Impala for actually making these past two weeks interesting. Playoffs may be out of reach for you guys, but keep up the solid play and you TWLJ newbs will gain some valuable experience for the upcoming TWL seasons.
Sage vs Respect: 35-50
I am disappointed in Sage. Not only did they choose to show a line with a minority of javs, but they allowed Paradise of all newbs to MVP. I’m just kidding Paradise, you’re ok. Anyways, the worst performance came from Major Crisis (1-10). Hard to blame him though, it’s like me going 1-10 in an LD (something that would not really be unexpected). Led by Eelam (12-7) and Paradise (14-8), Respect pulverized this less than adequate Sage lineup. I’m not exactly sure why Sage chose to throw this winnable game. With Thunder as an opponent next week, they just put themselves at risk of losing two in a row and sacrificing a high playoff seed. Hopefully this loss doesn’t have a significant impact on Sage in terms of first round playoff matchups; otherwise the decision to throw this game will be heavily regretted.
Dice vs Boss: 45-50
Well, this is the one everyone has been waiting for. What a remarkable turn of events to say the least. Dice’s undefeated season came to a halt at the hands of Boss of all squads. I guess the decision to play basers instead of javs came back to kick Dice right in the ass. It was in fact the poor performances of Cig Smoke (1-4) and Jamal (3-6) that cost Dice this match. I am not exactly sure as to the reason, but in a shocking move, Dice axed Maketso following the loss. Would be interesting to find out why as many believed Maketso to be one of the guaranteed starting five for Dice. Anyways, enough about the losers, it’s time to honour the winners. There is no doubt that 98% of the win has to be attributed to the brilliant pair of Kid Cudi (16-8) and Toxie (15-10). Each one independently accumulated more kills than all the other team members combined. This win was crucial for Boss, as a loss could very well have meant an end to their playoff hopes. They are now in a 3-way race with Respect and Sage for the final two seeds. The deciding factor will most likely culminate with whoever wins the Boss vs Respect matchup taking place in two weeks. It should be a very interesting game with a desperation feel to it. Good work this week Boss, keep it up!
Rapid vs Fatal: 50-43
This was a battle of two squads who now appear to be out of contention for a playoff berth. Fatal no longer has a shot, and I highly doubt Rapid will win all three of its final games. Nonetheless, for the sake of this Hot or Not and for the purpose of observing developing javs, it is still important to analyze these games. Lordy (5-10) and Riksa (3-8) were probably the defining factors in the loss. The rest of Fatal performed adequately but were unable to compensate for these two. Rapid on the other hand, experienced consistent play from most of its players. Creature (14-10) has been striving to get my attention in these articles for the past 3 weeks. Although he choked horribly (started like 9-2), he still ended with the most kills in the game and deserves some respect. Herbalist Yangyun (13-10) [fucking hate writing that name out, get a shorter name god dam] and Qyll (11-7) also had strong performances. With playoffs seeming out of reach for both these squads, the remaining games should serve developmental purposes. You never know, these squads can also break some hearts and upset one of the three on the brink of elimination.
Mad vs Shinobi: 50-43
This was generally a very balanced game. For the first time in a long time, Mad decided to show a line that can arguably be its starting five. The game was ultimately dominated by one player who led Mad to the victory. Turban (16-9) had by far his strongest performance of the season. It is unfortunate that I will be unable to give him the Hot this week given the dominance of the Boss duo over Dice, but on any other week he would have received it. No one player on Shinobi really lost it for them, they were simply outplayed. It is difficult to predict what this loss means in terms of playoff seeds, but with tough games against Sage and Dice still left on the schedule of Shinobi, there is a slight possibility that their berth is at risk. All in all if they want a chance at a post-season, Shinobi must bring their A-game from here on out and beat one of the aforementioned two.
In summary:
Hot of the Week: Kid Cudi/Toxie combo
Honourable Mention: Turban, Paradise
Not of the Week: Sage for their awful showing
Dishounrable Mention: Sodly, Cig Smoke/Jamal
Until next week, stay classy Trench Wars Leaguers!
