It's just typical staff (of any zone) thinking far outside the box of rational expectations. It's a video game, regardless of how old it is, simply put. You set a date, people will show, sort of like Field Of Dreams, pun intended.
I've seen this happen in other zones, where one inept staff member thinks of this cockeyed scheme of getting more people to show up for some particular event and it always ending up backfiring, that, or not completely working as expected. Logically, it's a sound idea, though, the concept would work nonetheless, being it started and/or ended sooner than later.
What I don't get is why all the hype about getting more people to watch a match? As stated in the above post, even if more people show up to these matches doesn't mean they'd stick around and start playing; begin or restart to play.
