HOT
In the TWLD games this week, missed opportunity was the clear theme. Sage came off a terrific regular season, but unfortunately 3 or 4 of their starters (Ground Zero, Kawrae, Marnix, Hermit) could not or did not show. They missed the chance to continue surprising the TW community and take out everyone’s favorite villain, Quicksand. Quicksand won the first round easily (50-29) with Kyou (13-4) and Weak (13-7) leading the way. Kid Kaos chipped in an impressive score (11-6) as well, as Zizu did his best (12-10) as the lone Sage regular warbird playing. In the second round, Sage blew yet another opportunity. NL>Trigger (13-10) helped them take a 34-27 advantage before a2m (7-1 to 7-6 to 15-10 MVP), Kid Kaos (13-10) and Quicksand stormed back following Kyou's sub of the positive PeteyMcNasty. Clearly that signaled to his squad that it was time to try. Golden Sun I (11-10) and Jari10 (9-10) gave a great effort and actually maintained a tie game with a 2v1 man advantage, but Kyou (4-4) split them up and took them down one after the other to lead his squad to the next round against Epidemic.
Fatal also blew a nice opportunity after they vaulted back for a huge comeback (14-22 to 50-39) using great teamwork against Thunder. Thunder’s experienced warbirds surprisingly seemed a little shell-shocked during the comeback, and Fatal had all the momentum. Chuckle was the only member of Thunder to maintain an even rec in Round 1, whereas Femur (anyone know who this is?), Jones, and Terian put up nice scores with 7 deaths for Fatal (12-7, 11-7, and 13-7 respectively). Also props to Riverside. for being the catalyst of the comeback, going from 0-7 to 8-7 and finishing 10-9. In the next round, Fatal grabbed the lead (21-19) after trailing early, Riverside. was dominating the match (11-4), and you could sense a similar 2nd half runaway about to happen. Unfortunately, it was not to be for Fatal. Raspi (15-8), B4sERmaN94_X (9-7), and Thunder seemed to wake up, or shake off the rust, or something, and they dominated the next round and a half. Riverside. finished poorly (11-10) after his teammates let him down and died out. In the final round, Jones (13-10) tried his best to take advantage of the opportunity, but Thunder, led again by Raspi, B4sERmaN94_X (both at 11-7) and Chuckle (13-10), overwhelmed Fatal and advance to the next round to face Mad. Ease also contributed with a +5 (9-4), surprisingly his only positive game of the 3.
NOT
I’m not sure who is to blame for the poor attendance of Sage’s warbirds. Whether a time was not negotiated properly and led to Sage’s demise, or just an unfortunate coincidence that none of them could make it this week, we the spectators were robbed of a potentially quality matchup. Back in Week 8, Sage beat Quicksand with pretty much their top line in (which led to the falling out between Geio and the rest of the squad). I know Sage’s main priority is probably TWLB, but this was a disappointing development from them anyways. Low scores from some of their non-warbirds who showed up include Dutch_ (3-10), Jari10 (4-10) Golden Sun 1 and NL>Trigger (both 5-10) in round 1. Zizu had a disappointing (8-10) round 2 by his standards, where he must feel that if he just got to even they might have won the round. H.M.S Stargazer took a break from hosting games over New Years to go 0-5 in quick fashion for Quicksand in round 2.
In the other series of games, any NOT discussion starts with Spaceship. He posted quality numbers in TWDT and in qualifying, but he has had a very mediocre TWL and it got much worse on Sunday. His rounds of 4-9, 1-10, and 5-10 (6-29) may have single-handedly lost the match for Fatal, especially in the 2nd round when they had the lead and the momentum but he did not contribute kills and died out first. He also died out first in the 3rd round, although Riverside. (5-10) and Femur (4-10) were right behind him. Jones sandwiched two solid rounds with a dud (6-10) in round 2. In the only NOT for Thunder, Burnt and Obi contributed equally to a 4-10 (although Burnt was running for his life 5v1 for most of it) in the first round.
HOT Player of the Week – Raspi (9-10, 15-8, 11-7) earns it over Kid Kaos/Kyou thanks to quality of competition and importance of the scores.
Runners up – Kid Kaos (11-6, 13-10), Kyou (13-4, 4-4 1v2 win), Chuckle (10-10, 8-6, 13-10), B4sERmaN94_X (7-10, 9-7, 11-7)
NOT Player of the Week – Spaceship (4-9, 1-10, 5-10) because he was bad and I have no idea why Sage didn’t show.
Runners up – Sage warbirds failing to show, Dutch_ (3-10, 8-10)
