  • TWLD Tiebreaker Information and Scenarios

So next week is the last week of the regular season and TWLD has an absolute logjam at spots 4-8. Even Penetrate, which has clinched a playoff berth, still has 3 possible seeds it can end up as. The tiebreaker rule:
Originally posted by 3.01b Playoff Ties
    I) By the end of TWL regular season, if two teams have the same record, the playoff spot will be awarded to the team that defeated the other in the regular season.

II) If more than two teams are tied, the winner of regular season games between them will get the spot (e.g. Team A beats Team B and C in regular season). If Team A beat B, B beat C, and C beat A, the team with the most total kills or most total time will be awarded the playoff spot.
This rule is ambiguous for some 4-way scenarios involving some but not all teams with tied records against the others within the group, however. I spoke with Flared and he decided that 4-way ties will be determined first by seeing how many wins Teams A, B, C, and D had against the other teams involved. If there were no two teams with the same number of wins against the others, that would be the order of the finish. If 2 teams were tied, head to head would determine their order, and the rest would be determined by number of wins against the others. If 3 or more teams had the same number of wins against the tied group, it would go to the most total kills just as the rules quoted to sort that tied segment of the group.

For example- Let's say Team A, B, C, and D were all tied in the final standings. It would then go to record against each other. If Team A was 2-1, Team B was 2-1, Team C was 1-2, and Team D was 1-2, then it would go to the regular season head to head of Team A vs. Team B, and Team C vs. Team D to determine the order. Assuming teams A and D won the respective matchups, then the final order would be Team A, B, D then C.

I went through and looked at all the possible scenarios involving Penetrate, Dynasty, Sweet, Asians, Hit, and Paladen (yes, it was necessary to look at Paladen). It was messy and complicated.

I also went through and totaled the current kills for the 5 squads who could potentially need it:
    Code:
    		Kills
    Penetrate	332
    Dynasty 330
    Asians 305
    Hit 317
    Sweet 366
I was going to list all of the possible scenarios, but that was really annoying and hard to read, and only staff really needs to see it really. So I made this easy for you. Find your team and look at all the possible scenarios for it.

Penetrate- Has clinched a playoff berth.
    • With a win, clinches the 4th seed.
    • With a loss and Sweet win, Penetrate would get the 5th seed if Asians won and 6th seed if Hit won.
    • With a loss and Sweet loss, Penetrate would get the 5th seed by losing to Dynasty by more than 2 and scoring at least 24 kills if Asians won (or the 6th seed if less than 24 kills), and get the 6th seed if Hit wins.

Dynasty- Clinch playoff berth with a win, and can get in with a loss.
    • With a win and Sweet win, Dynasty would get the 4th seed.
    • With a win and Sweet loss, if Asians won Dynasty would get the 4th seed if they beat Penetrate by more than 2, and if Hit won they would get the 4th seed.
    • With a loss and Sweet loss, Dynasty would miss the playoffs and finish 7th if Hit won, but would make the playoffs as the 6th seed if Asians won.
    • With a loss and a Sweet win, Dynasty would miss the playoffs.

Sweet- Clinch playoff berth with a win and help, cannot get in with a loss.
    • With a win and a Dynasty win, Sweet would be the 6th seed if Asians won and miss the playoffs If Hit wins.
    • With a win and a Dynasty loss, Sweet is the 5th seed if Asians won or the 6th seed if Hit wins.
    • With a Sweet loss and a Dynasty loss, they finish 9th.
    • With a Sweet loss and a Dynasty win, they finish 9th if Asians won and between 7 and 9 (based on most kills, which they currently have the most) if Hit won.

Asians- Can both make or miss playoffs with a win or a loss.
    • If Sweet and Dynasty both win, Asians would miss the playoffs regardless if they win or lose.
    • If Sweet wins and Dynasty lose, Asians would be the 6th seed if they win or miss If they lose.
    • If Sweet loses and Dynasty wins, they would be the 5th seed if they won and Penetrate scored less than 24 kills; they would be the 6th seed otherwise and miss entirely if they lost.
    • If Sweet and Dynasty both lose, Asians would be the 5th seed if they win or the 6th seed if they lose.

Hit- Clinch 5th seed with a win, cannot get in with a loss.
    • If Sweet and Dynasty both win, Hit would be the 5th seed with a win and can’t get in with a loss.
    • If Sweet wins and Dynasty lose, Hit would be the 5th seed with a win and can’t get in with a loss.
    • If Dynasty wins and Sweet lose, Hit would be the 5th seed with a win and can’t get in with a loss.
    • If Dynasty and Sweet both lose, Hit would be the 5th seed with a win and can’t get in with a loss.

Paladen- Cannot reach the playoffs, but they do factor into the tiebreaker if they beat Sweet and Dynasty also loses. They finish 7th and just miss the playoffs in one scenario.

Are you counting lagouts as kills? Final results on the scoreboard are different from total kill result if that's not the case. Sweet would have a total of 363...not sure if that really matters.

Even in a game with Asians and Dynasty there was a +1 for lagout. Probably some others.

infrared thought this was too long so he didn't read it guys, and he thought you should all know about how this thread was too long for him so he didn't read it. some people might consider it to be an insult when he goes out of his way to tell you that he didn't read your post, but not in this case.

I've just got a question about tiebreakers in TWLB. Say you have the three-way tie between squads where they have the same record, and each squad has lost one game and won a game against the other two. It would then go to their total time.

Squad A is awarded top spot among the three squads (who, let's say, are fighting for seeds 2, 3, and 4, so Squad A gets seed 2). That leaves Squad B and Squad C to fight over seeds 3 and 4. I'm just wondering if total time is the only thing that still matters between these two squads? If so, it'd be possible for Squad B to lose to Squad C and still get seed #3, so long as Squad B has more total time than Squad C, right?

You guys really need to read the rules.
This only happens if the wins occurred on a Sunday in which the day was an even number. If not, and the month does not have an ‘e’ in the month name, then they enter into a three way round robin TWSD tourney, best two out of two. If the tourney is tied, the ties are settled with total flag time. If total flag time is less than 60 seconds but more than 1 second, then Flared, Paul, and HMS play spin the bottle to break the tie. If Flared swaps spit with Paul, Squad A wins place. If Paul swaps spit with Flared, Squad B wins place. If either of them spins and the bottle lands on HMS, no team wins place and they are all disqualified.

ya imo, if you are tied in record with another team, but you beat them during reg season, then that matters more than total time in other games

Yeah, the outcome doesn't matter to me other than I noticed the rules were vague about what happens with the two losing squads in the 3-way. It could happen this season with Sage (A), Penetrate (B) and Pandora (C) (I won't go into it in detail, just take a look at the wins and losses between them if all squads ended up with 7-2 records), and I know some people would care who was #3 and #4 despite the lack of a bye in the equation, so this is a chance for staff to come up with the answer ahead of time.

Oh and btw, Spastic is already out of the TWLB playoffs.
