Hello,
as I had some extra time today before getting ready for my trip, I've decided to do a quick statistical review of the first round of TWLJ.
Below are the Top 33 players from Round 1 sorted by rating. The rating formula I decided to use does not take into account win rates or strength of schedule and is purely based on individual performance meaning these ratings should be taken with a grain of salt. Additionally, as our seasons are far too short, there is no way to get an accurate representation of talent and skill with so little information available when doing a statistical analysis on the players and squads.
As you may have noticed, there are a couple of surprising faces high in the rankings such as Euforia, Neymar, and Iron Survivor, none of which I expected to perform this well in the first week.
In one of the least competitive TWLJ seasons to date, we saw no surprises in the first round of matches. Nevertheless there is a glimmer of hope for this season as we saw some pleasant surprises from certain players, and there are new players are slowly being introduced to the league scene.
1) BurN (2-0)
This is the team to beat this season. They have the depth to compete each week, and the scary part is that they have more players that could easily influence the outcome of a game with the likes of Havok, Cape, and Amnesti sitting in the reserve team. It is quite disappointing to see a team stack this much individual talent on one squad, but such actions are to be expected nowadays.
BurN dismantled Vikings in a game which ended up being the biggest blowout of the week with an end result of 50 to 25, and they simply outclassed Fierce in their other match. No surprises this week from the squad, and next week could easily be a repeat story of this round.
2) Dudgeon (2-0)
The other juggernaut of this season. Their strength is very comparable to BurN as they also have some excess players that could easily be playing on other squads which would improve the health of the competition. However the key difference between these two squads is the fact that most of the players in Dudgeon are capable of playing in two, or even three, different leagues on a competitive level which allows the squad to operate on a much smaller scale.
Dudgeon had two easy matches this weekend one of which featured a big mistake from the captains of LEGO. That mistake allowed Rough to spawn kill a player five times, which not only secured the MVP for the player in question, but effectively turned the game heavily in their favor. In their other match against Vikings we saw one of the biggest individual surprise of the week with Euforia dropping 17 kills against a weakened Dudgeon lineup.
3) Juans (2-0)
The dark horse of the tournament returns after disappointing last season. Juans have always had the potential and talent to match the very best teams on a good day, and this season is no different as they return with two new additions to their lineup: Ease and Steadman.
Juans emerged victorious in both of their games with all of their players performing in perfect harmony. This is a sign of a balanced team which does not rely on star players to carry, but rather achieving victory by simply playing better as a team. I am hoping for them to keep up this momentum for the rest of this season.
4) Cobra (1-1)
Cobra returns this season with no big changes to their lineup. They are once again very close to being a challenger in the league, but fall a bit short when looking at the depth of their javelin roster. However, if they were to manage to acquire a talented player or two during the week, who knows how far this team could get this season.
Cobra grabbed a solid victory against Potenza in an evenly-matched clash which featured two mid-tier squads. The individual performances of Shadowmere and Neymar were pleasant surprises as Shadowmere greatly assisted in the victory against Potenza with his 14-9 score, and Neymar managed to drop 15 kills against Juans in a close match that ended up being a loss.
5) LEGO (1-1)
LEGO is close yet so far away from being competitive in this league. They have two solid players in their roster that could enable the squad to fight for the fourth seed, however the inactivity of Shock Therapy and Infrared will remain as the deciding factor. unfortunately the activity of Shock Therapy and Infrared remain a mystery on Sundays meaning it will be a real struggle to get to the Winners' Bracket this season for the squad.
After grabbing a solid victory against You2be, LEGO got absolutely dismantled against Dudgeon in a match that not only featured several non-javelin players from their side, but also fatal captain mistakes with substitutes. They will need to grab a win against Potenza next week if they wish to get a better seed in the playoffs.
6) Potenza (1-1)
This squad is an enigma to me. They have the lag advantage with the likes of Okyo and Iron Survivor, and some of their players are underrated by the community. It will be interesting to see how far they will get this year with their lineup.
Potenza started their season strong with a convincing victory against Vikings, and a narrow loss against Cobra which definitely deserves to be called the match of the week. This team is one of the squads to compete for the fourth seed this season along with Cobra, LEGO, Fierce, and even You2be.
7) Fierce (0-2)
Fierce is an interesting team to talk about. Their core are mostly players who mainly used to play warbird, but have over the years gotten into the javelin scene. As you may have noticed, it is a rare sight to see new players to not only emerge to the scene, but also perform reasonably well. Fierce is definitely one of the biggest contributors to this league with several of their former one-league players getting to the point of recognition in TWLJ.
Unfortunately it was a rather disappointing week for the squad. They were uninspiring in both of their games, barely losing to Juans and Burn, but the depth of their roster still makes them a mid-tier contender and even a potential challenger in the playoffs. I would advise teams to not take this squad lightly.
8) You2be (0-2)
This squad reminds me of Boss from several years ago, and the potential of pulling a similar miracle is plausible if all their players show and perform above their levels.
After two relatively close losses against LEGO and Dudgeon, You2be is still in decent shape despite their shaky start. Euforia had by far the best week on their team, and arguably in the league, and if players such as Fork and Toxic show on Sundays this squad could easily make an upset or two happen this regular season, and with some luck make it somewhat far in the playoffs. Do not count them out yet!
9) Vikings (0-2)
Sitting on the bottom of the table, Vikings are one of the weakest squads in this league, but on a more positive note as long as new players are getting competitive experience and guidance from the veteran players, there is future for this zone. The loss of M_M God, their core player and former captain, was a huge blow to their chances of achieving a single victory in this league, and Vikings now have to defeat the odds to cause a single upset this season.
Alas, the week itself went as expected for the squad as they lost heavily against Potenza and Burn. However, with one positive result against any team in the league, they could still potentially make it to the revamped playoffs. Additionally, the squad rotated their lineup heavily which is good from a players' perspective.
In my opinion, player of the week is definitely euforia despite his team going 0-2. Two good performances back-to-back, dropping 17 kills against Dudgeon and scoring the third highest rating of the weekend was enough to convince me that he played well above expectations. He also had the highest amount of kills this week, scoring 29 for his team.
Kess and Neymar would be good runner-ups with their respectable performances this week, but the five team kills from Kess struck as a huge negative.
