First of all, white Canadian kids who can't even use contractions properly shouldn't be trying to tackle racial slurs.

But yes, it is kind of a double-standard. But then again, you have to think about the fact that these words and phrases have been used for so long as a means to discriminate. Even now, when most people use them (the blaring example is this game) it's an effort to discriminate or offend. At very least, it's always a cry of "please help me, I'm 12 going on 4, and I can't find my pacifier."

It's been said before, and I'll go ahead and say it again: Racial slurs, like anything else, are dangerous in context.

Is it right for you to be saying things like "stupid n*****"? No, definitely not--especially not in public (real life or spaceship games/forums), unless you secretly want to get the shit kicked out of you.

Is it right for Ja Rule to say it? It's questionable, but it's semi-acceptable on the terms that he's "taking power" away from the word/phrase. It's the same idea that homosexuals sometimes use the phrase "fag"... it's been a put-down for so long that once the group it's describing starts using it, the idea is that it loses it's discriminatory meaning.

I'm sure a lot of members of the black community would agree with your point--if we were truly trying to stop the use of racist words/phrases, then all involved should stop using them, even in jest.

The old "they call each other that, why can't I call them that?" argument holds little water, because it completely overlooks the context of the way it's being used. When someone who is black uses that term in conversation with another black person, it carries a different meaning than if say a white person did. And that's what it all comes down to, the meaning behind its use.

That old argument also isn't worth much when you are looking at words that may or may not be used in the game. Take a look at television, for example. On network television, there are many words that you cannot say, though they may be used elsewhere, like fuck and shit.

If the reason racial slurs are bad is because they are used to offend, then shouldn't all language that is intended to offend be banned? Making cluture or ethnicity the line in the sand between what is sacred and what is acceptable to attack is a remnent of the attitudes that made racism such a problem in the first place. On the boards or in the game, one can attack another's intelligence, sexuality, family, nationality (ie: dumb american, euro trash), social position, connection speed, gender, or just spew baseless obscenities, yet once certain racial slurs are used (not even ALL racial slurs, i've seen alot of them get under the radar becuase they are either uncommon in usage or worse, people don't feel that group(s) deserves special protection) it's like we're back in time when those words still carried the sting they were originally designed with.

By making a specific type of personal attack taboo over a field of much more pertinent areas of sensetivity, backlash agasint what is protected is inevitable. If for on other reason but consistency, speech should either be unrestricted, or (as on most boards), blatant personal attacks prohibited all togther, not just the feel good rules that make it seem like somebody is atoning becuase their grandfather was a bigot.

i know it's pretty obvious that racism is a warnable/bannable offense, but i was looking through the rules sticky in the announcements section...and i couldn't find anything specific. the closest i could find was in the last paragraph, "otherwise objectionable to our sole discretion" where racism, i guess, falls under the guidelines of your discretion. click for rules thread here

i'm seriously not trying to push buttons, whore for attention, or in anyway subvert your message to coyote, but i've seen much more direct racist language from our dearest friend twinkie <>< (for example) and others, so i'm curious why coyote was warned when he used some *(#'s to cover up the entire slur when other people don't get warnings at all.
