Don't get an iPod. When the battery runs down, and it will run down, you will have to send it in to replace the battery. This will cost you $99.
Not worth it.
This problem has been fixed with the new revision of iPods, and as such is no longer a problem. Just dont buy a used one
as for bloodzombie.
Reasons to purchase an iPod over the competition: (Creative Muvo2 4GB, iRiver iHP-100 series)
It just looks better (personal taste), but in this day and age we are fickle, and want something that just oozes class.
More storage space than the Muvo, and more than the iRiver iHP-100 series if you get it with the 60gb HD.
Easier to use, with a "huge" orange backlit screen, and a simple to use scroller it is infinately easier to use than the iRiver product, the creatives tiny screen and odd scroller makes finding specific songs and playing them much more of a hassle.
Peripherals, the iPod has a LOT of peripherals, from wireless kits to connect it to your car radio, to flash media readers it beats both creative and iRiver when it comes to peripherals.

I had a play with a friend's ipod. I didnt like the way the circular control works, it's too sensitive. Also the back of the ipod is made of a shiny metal, when you get your first fingerprint on it you'll cry.
ipod has li batteries that die... sorta happens with all batteries, but u cant really replace the batteries... well, you can, but its hard and costs $50 usd. I'd get a Zen, if size is really important, get the rio karma, or get a cd - mp3 player... ipod is crap...
Personally, I use an Archos 20 GB player that also records sounds. So I can basically record the day's school lectures, and then listen to my tunes later. Battery life is about 10 or so hours, pretty good for a HD based player. It's a little heavy, but that's a trade off I didn't mind making.
5:royst> i was junior athlete of the year in my school! then i got a girlfriend
5:the_paul> calculus is not a girlfriend
5:royst> i wish it was calculus
1:royst> did you all gangbang my gf or something
1:fermata> why dont you get money fuck bitches instead
The problem with the battery seems way blown out of proportion to me. From what I've read it supposedly lasts about 2 years before it dies. If I have to pay $99 once every two years, big freakin deal.
