The only ska album I ever really enjoyed was Keasbey Nights by Catch-22. I didn't know anyone still liked ska, but if you do, I highly recommend checking that album out.
Catch-22 ... the pride of NJ ska =D.
What's that "never have to knock on wood" band/song? That's another ska group.
Indeed Mulkero, but did you see my point? That a guy who is very good at his own genre, may not become famous and rich because that music genre is too risky to place money at. While some fucker who hops up and down pushing one key all the time can earn shitloads of money just for being there.
Something is wrong :/

its cause all the 13 year old kids wanna see daft punk and all this bs that some random nerd can make millions from his little pos song created on a comp in 2 mins.
i should make some more techno bs on fruity-loops and sell it to BMG for a hefty sum.

I rarely buy cds, cause they are way too expensive here in Finland at least. And what's really the point, when like 90% of the money (or something) goes straight to the record company?
Record companies exist to loan bands the money they need to produce their CDs and have them promoted. Once they sell enough CDs to have that loan repaid, that is where most of the sale will be paid to the band itself. Contracts deciding this will vary from band to band, and even record company to record company.
As for the prices of CDs, you will notice that those artists in the top 20 will always be above par of a regular CD because they know they can sell it high because the demand for it by tasteless pre-pubescent girls with their hands in their daddy's hip pocket, warrants it. Whereas your underground metal act produced by the lesser known record company will always be cheaper because they lack the publicity to sell records on the same scale as your top 20 assclowns.
Should there be an excess of a particular CD in stock and the demand for it is low, that is where the store will reduce it's price to the point where it may become a bargain. It's all economics. Music is the industry, and record companies are the shareholders. Without sufficient buying power, their shares bottom out, metaphorically, and they will drop their stock and move on to other ventures.
I for one download most music I like, but if I see a particular CD going cheap in shops, I will buy it if only to keep that band in the industry. Because the fact remains that if you don't sell CDs (or mp3s in some cases), you aren't going to have a long music career.
I don't think they make songs in 2mins. I don't think they just keep pressing one button time after time either. That's not how it works. Making music with computer is as hard as making music with a guitar. Or as easy. I have 2 guitars and I do some electronical stuff on my comp.
Da1, if it's so easy to make millions of dollars "pressing one key", why don't you go exploit the system? Quick! You're the only one that notices! Go do it! You can be a millionaire!!!!!! Oh, wait, you can't do that. While I'm not a huge fan of trance or techno music, although I like some "electronica" (is that the same? I don't even know) then again, I haven't listened to much, either, there's gotta be some reason people like some DJs more than others, and whatever they do to differentiate themselves has got to be some kind of skill. Innovating in rock music is really hard to do these days, and many of the rock bands nowadays that I find truly interesting actually combine electronic elements with their rock music. If I'm going to listen to someone that's good at guitar, I want to listen to Hendrix.

CD's are way too expensive, yes. Let's say an average worker gets like 10 euros per hour and a CD costs around 20. He has to work 4 hours just to buy one CD! That's robbery (half of the money went to taxes btw). I could only afford to buy about 1 cd per month and I want at least 2-3 new cds every week to feel like I'm listening to "fresh" music as well.

I dont know where you live but i think in the rest of the world its simply not true. The top 30 cds are cheapers because of two facts one is because they are in production so supply is high (many old cds have stopped being produced or cut back severly e.g its impossible to get any motorhead produced in Aust) secondly demand is high for them yes but there is also high competition which drives prices as low as possible (maybe in your country competition is low?).
The reason why old cds cost more is because one they cut back on production only like one or two in the store so the store doesnt need to worry about selling 30-50 of cd a day they would be willing to wait until a person will buy it at that price and two the person will buy it at a higher price because they may not be able to find it anywhere else. If the older cd is sold at a lower price it is generally because they know other stores have the same cd and is still popular e.g any metallica albums but if you take a band like white snake there is a limited number of thier albums in stores so you have to hunt for the one you want and if you find it you will be prepared to pay a higher price.
Note: i worked at a cd store so i generally find older cds actually cost more than the newer ones, i think cds is like one of the unique products where the older it gets the more expensive it is due to 1.production 2.consumer "hunting".

jeeze half of your money goes to tax, i say you should talk to you local govt about that an average blue collar worker (e.g labourer) here gets taxed about 30% or less! Unless do you guys have a good and services tax?
I dont know why the prices of cd's are so high cost of production should be significantly decreased with technology and competition is high.

nothing is wrong.. like someone already said, there's a lot of skill in making electronic music. I'm sure you could learn the basics, and throw a song together and be like "see that? I should be a millionair! anyone can do it!" but guess what... peole who are into the music will know immediately that you're a hack and nobody will buy it. you won't be able to tell the difference because you don't have an appreciation for the music, which is really what it comes down to.
If rock is what you listen to, then complain about the shitty rock bands, don't complain about a genre that you don't understand.
