I think if that'd been my kid, not only would I have pointed and laughed when he got the award, if he complained I woulda have had to say "Well now we know why you got that award, don't we?" And to think a genius coach such as that has been fired.

when i was 11 my baseball coach intentionally hit me during batting practice because i was and still am afraid of the ball. it was his reasoning that once it hit me my fear would be erased or something. i'm guessing this crybaby coach dude was thinking the same thing. that being said, my ex coach didn't get fired and i just quit the team and baseball altogether.

It is pretty embarassing for that kid and his parents and the teacher shouldn't have done it.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal...

Meh.. there are worse things than being embarrassed. Kinda what's wrong in the world today.. too many giant flaming pussies, that are so grievously shocked when it's pointed out to them that they sometimes act like giant flaming pussies. That kid could have parlayed that trophy into being popular, if instead of being embarrassed or goofy about it.. he went along with the joke, and cracked a few bigger jokes himself. Note: That article never once says whether the coach meant it in good humor or not.

Edit: What the crap? Man thank goodness for the 1 message post every 30 seconds thing. I pushed the submit post thingy and nothing happened at all .. so I pushed it.. and the same page reloaded with the text box.... and then nothing, not showing my message or anything, so I hit it again, and my message is there and I'm told about the 30 second thing.. yay no more double posting.

The problem is that he's in a position of trust and he represents the school board as an authority. In these situations, coaches, like teachers, are expected to hold to a higher set of standards. It's one thing if his teammates got together and nominated each other for awards. It's another if he's a teacher. The fact that he "called the boy and told him he would be getting a special trophy" but didn't tell him what trophy it was shows that he set out to humiliate the boy, and as a coach and teacher, that is not acceptable professional behaviour. It didn't say in this article but I read in from a different source that he was also a Special Education teacher and in such a position should be well aware of how something like this can be damaging to a thirteen year old. Because of the role he plays as a coach and a teacher, it doesn't matter if he meant it in good humour or not.

Yes, he's in a position of authority, and it would be a real shame if the kid WAS a crybaby and whining all the time, and this taught him to stop being so, rather than teaching him that by whining louder and possibly getting lawyers involved, he can get his way. The article didn't say and I have no idea if they nominated each other or not, but even with him designating the "award" which I find quite funny that EVERY person on the team won an award. (Yay I'm 5th MVP! maybe, I dunno) The one thing I was most surprised about in your reply TK, while I respect your views on this subject, I just do not and will not ever agree with them, is this:

This is jumping to a conclusion, making an assumption, and (I assume) you haven't even spoken to the man or anyone involved. It doesn't prove anything other than the fact that he called him and said he'd be getting a special trophy. For all you know, he could have been giggling and tittering like a little schoolgirl throughout that entire call. If he is a Special Education teacher, you didn't specify whether it was that he taught special education classes, and also coached a team, that was or was not made up of his special education students. The article probably didn't specify either, which would lead me to believe that most likely: The team isn't made of special ed students. To be pointedly honest.. if this award is the most damaging thing that happens to that 13 year old, then he needs consider himself one of the luckiest people on the planet.
